I wanted to try something different for the cliche challenge. It's yet "another damn flower" but with a twist to set it apart. Even beauty can hide pain or danger. . .

I heard a quote once that went something like:
"It is wise to remember. . . that amongst the roses there be thorns."

Note: Fake blood stains, it will take days to get this stuff off my hand. The things we do for a challenge.

Just in case anyone drops by. This shot was not a gratuitous shock shot. I tried for "deeper" meaning with this shot. The flower is considered feminine, while a red rose typically suggests love. The hand and arm are obviously masculine. The hand is in a fist which denotes power and/or control. The blood symbolizes damage and pain. While considered extreme the amount of blood was to make the viewer stop and try to figure out what was being said. I think a few people almost understood it but I cant' be sure.
Lesson learned? Don't go for deep on DPC, takes too much time to interpret and most people can't or won't take the time.

OK. That is just nasty. I can understand journalistm photography and product photography and wedding photography but what exactly is this? ;P It is technically sound. A few too many leaves maybe and the blood looks too dark and thick. It fits the challenge (tho my idea of the challenge was to take a really good shot of a common subject so that you appreciate it more rather than coming up with something different). I'm just not sure what you would do with this photo outside of dpc. If your goal is just to practice technically then you succeeded. If you're trying to make pleasing picture then I think you might wanna forget the gore. If you just wanna push the envelope then you might need something that's a little more emotionally charged.

Very intense! Strong impact. Well done.

Don't care if it is fake or not. I had already cried ouch before I saw the blood. Like the tiny detail of the scratch on the arm at the edge, or did you mean to do that. Sosrry but you can't get a rose without the thornes. But you did get a well done photo. Technically you got them all right. Except for 1 tiny little thing: I can't find any thorns on the stem, guess they're all stuck in the hand. Not a beauty winner, but you expected that, but a good of a photo as any. Good one.

Good job of composition and getting a nice clean image. I also like the imagery portrayed. One observation I have is that the hand is so much brighter (and larger) than the rose, that it tends to dominate. I think you could get a nice effect and more attention to the rose by pointing a background light behind the rose.

disturbing...

Sick twist...but well done.

You have a great concept. The lighting, color, focus and composition are all good technically speaking. Personally I would alter a few minor things. A female hand to match the femininity of the flower and to avoid the hairy arm. Rather sexist I do admit. The fake blood is a little dark, thick and copious. A few lighter color drops to indicate a pricked pinky would be OK. However, this is a very creative foto which deserves substantial merit on that effort alone. You have a great imagination. Keep up the good work.

IS THAT REAL BLOOD? AAAAAAH!
02/04/2003 01:18:48 AM
why such focused lighting on such a subject? my morbidity compels me to say that it's reminiscent of pornography. interesting concept and subject, just an awkward execution.
02/03/2003 03:06:05 PM
i find the blood more distracting to the image than enhancing.
02/03/2003 12:44:00 PM
nice sharp pic but maybe a bit too much blood
02/03/2003 10:09:49 AM
