Challenge: Extended Free Study 2016-05 (Extended Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-1D Mark IV
Lens: Sigma 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro for Canon
Location: Pattaya
Date: May 17, 2016
Aperture: f/3.5
ISO: 6400
Shutter: 1/25

Date Uploaded: Jun 14, 2016

Another in a series of architectural abstracts partly inspired by Andreas Gursky and partly by the writing of J G Ballard.

The moon was almost exactly overhead and the lines of this image pretty much came together by themselves when framed in the 24mm prime. The offset position of the moon creates a dynamism to the composition that wouldn't have been possible if I'd placed the moon where I originally wanted it, filling more negative space in the sky to the right; of many shots, this was the composition that jumped out the most in the end.

The curves were adjusted to bring just a little more blue to the shadows and just a little more amber to the highlights, amplifying the already cinematic effect of the natural light.

The moon shot was a separate image taken with a much longer lens (400mm with 2x telephoto extension on the 20D's 1.6x crop body), and composited over the real one in value mode, with curves adjusted separately. The billboard, likewise, is composited from another rooftop image taken the same week in Bangkok.

Editing: Compositing, levels, curves, heal to clean up a few sensor hot spots, dodge & burn, resize, sharpen.

Hello from the critique club

An interesting image that contributes well to the extended free study

I can understand why you went for this particular composition, yes, it does work well. I particularly like the moon shot with its hazy halo, your blending has worked well, in fact the end result is very convincingly looking like one in-camera shot. Perhaps this may be why the shot hasn't hit the audience in the way you would have liked, though I don't subscribe to the view that the extended rules have to be used in an obvious way.

Anyway regardless, this is still a worthy addition to your Gursky/Ballard portfolio, thank you for your entry Eugene.
