I like it. the pen and ink feel- the horse head and tail are terrific. I am guessing that people did not care for the border, the tilt, the title(can't make sense of the hat equation)- and perhaps the blown out body-into sky feel-something like that. But still quite a worthy shot.

It reminds me of a pencil drawing. So I wonder if it lost a point here & there because of that--people might've thought you relied on PP to make it look artistic. I don't know, but that's why I didn't use noticeable PP in this challenge. Anyway, I found the hat. Even now that I know what it is, for some reason, I still have trouble seeing it as a hat. My poor brain. I like the row of spectators' eyes behind the fence. See ya in the next challenge!

Commenting as part of my commitment to Team Suck:

On second viewing, it is indeed an interesting photo... unfortunately, there wasn't the draw on first viewing and voting to make me want to look too long and hard at this. The processing seemed harsh, but given the subject, that's probably fitting. Also, I tend not to look at the titles of all the photos, and had I read this title, it would have compelled me to go and look for the hat... which would have led me to fully appreciate the moment you captured. I apologies for not giving this the attention it deserved earlier...

Interesting editing of a great action photo. Very graphical, but I like the old look.

This almost engraved image seems to be meant for a stamp illustration. I love the almost oriental look of the rider, the precise moment of the lost hat (a good title), the faded-in-the-dust look, the horse as if aware of being admired.

I really can't make out what's what here. It took me several seconds to make out the figure of the rider...

Ha! The ear looks like a horn. So this must be a unicorn!

all fine until I look at the tail...what is that?

Oh, the horse is catching the hat with its tail! Love the image and the processing. It sort of looks like it could have come out of a very old newspaper.

my first reaction was the processing was overdone, but then I saw the hat, and I thought, yes, you processed this perfectly.
