Greetings from the Critique Club :)

Hi Sulamk! I received your email and I feel lucky to have gotten your photo to critique. This will be an example of the types of critiques we are looking for in the Critique Club...

I love a waterfall. I enjoy photographing them myself and here are a few examples of some I have done in the past:

//www.pbase.com/image/5520374
//www.pbase.com/image/5555604
//www.pbase.com/image/8563364

I think you did a great job of capturing this particular waterall in the context of the 'landscape' challenge. Your vista in this particular shot covers the waterfall and plenty of surrounding land as well :)

One of the things about this image that I particularly like is the color contrasts. The blue sky / red rocks / greenery work very well together in this image. The waterfall itself is just a nice single element that makes this image stand out. I believe that all great landscape shots, contrary to the finishing order in the challenge this week, need some single 'strong' element for the viewer's eye to come to rest on. Your waterfall profides that to me in this image.

As for a possible improvement on this image...

I'm looking at your camera settings. My personal preference on waterfall photos, as shown in my examples, is 'soft' water created by a slower shutter speed with the camera. There is a simple trick to getting this. Your aperture was set to F4.5 and a shutter speed of 1/160". Without knowing any better, I would assume that this was a 'point and shoot' shot taken with the default camera settings.

If you had chosed aperture priority and setup with a smaller aperture (larger F number), your shutter speed would have slowed down some which would have created 'softer' water in this shot. You can also get even longer shutter speeds in a situation like this by using a polarizer or a neutral density filter on your camera.

For more information about shutter and aperture priority photo modes, take a look at my tutorial on DPC at:

Controlling Your Exposure

This tutorial explains how aperture and shutter priority affect your images...

Keep up the good work and I will be in touch with some links for you on critiques very soon :)

Wow -- what a great spot! I wish I lived near something like that! -10

I really like the composition of this picture. Parts of it seem a bit out of focus or of low definition, such as the upper left corner. You might have brightened it a little, or saturated the sky a little more. Good job, though.

Lovely rich colours and composed well!

Wow, I'm jealous! Wish I was there. The colours are great and I like the composition. The only thing I'd change (not sure if possible) is to see the bottom of the fall ... I find the rock on the left bottom corner a bit distracting. Jacko 9

Very nice! Sharp photo with lots of great color. Good amount of blue sky. Did the falls disappear below the rock in front - or - could you have shot over that rock? I'd like to see more of the waterfall. Still, all in all, this is very nice. 9 Swash

Beautiful, comp. is great, crisp clear shot, one that you get your emotions all wrapped up in. I like your border.

It could have been divided into upper and lower halves and make two good pictures.

Beautiful setting! My only suggestion would be to place the waterfall a bit more to the left of the shot, it is not perfectly centered and I would either prefer it to be right in the center or a bit more to either of the side.7.

This is a lovely scene, and a great waterfall. Is the focus a bit soft?

Wow, great capture. The colors are awesome. I wish there was some way we could reference how big the waterfall was. Perhaps this would be a shot where a person sitting on a rock would benefit it. One of my faves this week.

I like the sky a lot. The fall is a little too centered maybe. I'm not sure what other perspectives you could have used, but there's a little too much of the tree on the left considering how dark the shadows in it are. There may be some way to shoot this and include a person to emphasize the height of the fall.

Excellent tones! Good subject matter. The focus though is a little soft. Good luck!

Lovely shot, colour saturation is quite strong here, but I like that that.

I realy like the overly saturated colors, but in my opinion these are just a bit over done.

Its picturesque, its nice, but it seems like its missing something compositionally. Maybe a little wildlife or maybe just a little color. Nicely taken and I bet it isn't hard to make this look good. - Inspzil

A beautiful photograph. I really like it. I think maybe if you had gotten a lot more of the area surrounding the waterfall it would have fit the challenge even better. I give you an 8!! -Annida
