So there's the disagreement over what constitutes a landscape.

I always thought that landscape was the overall category and seascapes were a sub-category.

Dictionary.com says:
1. a section or expanse of rural scenery, usually extensive, that can be seen from a single viewpoint.
2. a picture representing natural inland or coastal scenery.
3. Fine Arts. the category of aesthetic subject matter in which natural scenery is represented.
4. Obsolete . a panoramic view of scenery; vista.

Merriam Webster says landscape is:
1 a : a picture representing a view of natural inland scenery
b : the art of depicting such scenery

and according to Merriam-webster a seascape is:

1 : a view of the sea
2: a picture representing a scene at sea

So according to Dictionary.com this is a landscape.

Now -- about Merriam-Webster:

This actually isn't coastal -- it's definitely not the sea. This is the James River. So I'm thinking that it's definitely inland; it's certainly not the sea.

So is it a landscape? Or do we need to call it a riverscape?

Riverscape doesn't exist in Merriam-Webster, by the way. However, it does exist in dictionary.com. :D

Anyway -- taken on a cloudy, rainy, overcast (and very cold!!) day. I love these days, because the horizon almost completely disappears. (in fog, it completely disappears)

Thanks for all the comments!

I liked it enough to give it an 8, and I don't give out very many of those. Seems everyone was pretty happy with it being a landscape!

I keep looking for a lone cypress tree like this...you would think they would be in abundance here in FL...Excellent Job...

I suppose i have to make the same comment I made on the other similar shot, I don't see this as being a landscape unless you are counting the tree. It's quite good and I quite like but it just doesn't fit the challenge for me.

Really gives a feeling of the last survivor.

Confidently, assertively minimal. The detailed tracery of the cypress seems to lord over an empty world; yet the soft waves of the water's surface offer plenty of quiet detail as the horizon disappears. Wonderful tonal control. Beautiful image.
