Deserved a much higher score imo.

The general requirement for portraiture seems to be to eliminate shadows on the subject. Poohee! I just LOVE your lighting! It's so natural and warm. The shadows are perfect. Well cast model too. Awesome.

Very nice "studio" shot, bottom right corner coulda been cropped out though, (minor nitpick)-- 8

this is a beautiful portrait, very well composed, very compelling. i think it could be improved slightly if the lighting on the face was a little more balanced. if the shadow from her nose was softened, this would move up a notch for me. i like how the black top allows her torso to contribute to the composition without taking focus away from her face.

You got this RIGHT! Simply beautiful!

Photographically excellent, but the pastels and neutrals of the dried eucalyptus (and whatever those blue things are) seems to me to clash badly with the strong geometrics of her scarf. I'm sure your choice of props was intentional, this being a studio shot, but to a casual viewer it just doesn't fit. The stool is fine, but I'd definitely lose the other stuff on this shot.

I wish you focused on her beautiful face only. The light could be dimmed a bit more. And there is strong shadow on the left which is disturbing a bit.

Returning for comment:

Excellent portrait, well-done on the lighting and the soft focus treatment enhanced the photo quite well. 8

A great photo. I have one problem with it though. It seems like it should be a great studio shot. Almost a 'glamour' photo but I feel she is either too bored or troubled. I definitely think more expression and personality could have been captured.

I don't care for the wide border 6

Your model is way to pretty to not have a big smile on her face! Actually, the expression is great, the border is nice, and overall the photo is great. Good Stuff!

Super, super portrait. Lighting is outstanding as is the pose. It works very well with the gray / white background. I have two minor problems: a) The triangle of skin in the bottom right corner, and b) the border is just too much.

A sweey and very tender study. though posed, it has a very natural feel and the wicker and dried flowers lend it a very friendly . Good lighting and good attention to background. Bumping up two notches.

Nice studio shot. Your model's expression is hard to read, and doesn't really seem to convey the "warmth" from the title. Lighting and exposure are good, and the pose is well done. A bit more light from the left side would make things seem a bit less stark.

10/04/2004 05:46:17 PM
I think the border is a bit too wide. Besides that, I really like this shot. The slight shadow cast by something out of sight on the left is maybe a bit distracting. The pose is cliche but it works well with her facial expression. Alsom the colors are great! 8

this is pure pro. beautifully lit, nicely posed, though maybe a little still or unnatural or something. the model's expression is fantastic - she looks comfortable in front of the camera, which speaks volumes about the photographer in my mind. i could do without the bevelled inside edge on the border, but that's not something i'd deduct points for by any means. well done.

Oh my goodness! This is stunning! I hope you are doing portraiture for a living, because you certainly have the gift! The frame really adds to this too! How could anyone give this anything but a 10! If I could give a 10+ I would!

I'm not sure about the title on this one...nor the extraneous objects (those leaves are distracting, as is the wicker)... but SHE is divine! Lovely skin tones, great shadowing, and her expression and pose is perfect. I would've cropped the bit of skin showing in the lower right corner, but that's just me. I guess it's kinda making my eye wanna wander outside the shot ahaha...which isn't a BAD thing, no no. The first thing my eyes gravitate towards is her eyes...she's a beauty, and this is a beautiful shot. Thanks!!

To much shadow on the left side.

This is simply one of the best portraits in the challenge. But, I think the large white border is wasted here.

10/03/2004 06:42:44 AM
Oh yes, very nice! Superb lighting, well posed, good composition, great colours and skin tone, effective background, good model... this portrait has quality written all over it. I like the fact that her pose adds the top-left to bottom-right diagonal. Great expression, the catchlights work well. The edge of her right arm doesn't quite work for me... it's either haloed from oversharpening, or you've tried to remove it, but this is nitpicking. 10

I love the pose in this, it's got a nice feeling and mood. Colors are really nice, but the clarity is a little off. It looks like you tried for a soft focus, but it kind of just looks a little blurred, but that could just be me. Not sure if the border really works for this as it tends to take away from the size of the photo and thus losing some detail.
I like it a lot though, it's a really nice portrait. 7

Technically this is excellent. I like the color. I like her beautiful skin tone. However I fell the pose seems staged and puts her right in the middle of the frame. I'd like to see a more relaxed pose.

10/02/2004 07:37:37 PM
This is one of the few times that I think a larger border actually does help an image, providing some separation from the similarly shaded background in your image. The portrait itself is very good.

10/02/2004 06:25:16 PM
nitpick: I'd clone out the little bit of clothing showing at the bottom right corner.

Otherwise, Beautiful. Just beautiful. Your model is beautiful, it's wonderfully lit... great composition. I can feel the warmth in her eyes mixed with a bit of attitude in the bandana.

My vote would have been 10, despite my little nitpick.

A well lit shot and an attractive model, but there is something lacking, could well be the white background. Oe, perhaps it is the floral arrangement...yep, cropped out it looks so much better. Started with a 6, bumped to 7

outstanding portrait. she has a gorgeous face with beatutiful lips and skin tone and sparkling eyes. I like the relaxed pose and the cool headband. I think it could have been slightly improved with more modern or minimalist props to compliment her simple black shirt and the geometric pattern on the headband, but tis works great as is as well. a fantastic portrait.

Very well done though!!

Excellent portrait study. Skin tones are very even and warm (to go along with your title). I think the headband is a bit distracting especially with the black and white pattern on it. Make it scream for attention. A neutral gray color might have been more appropriate if you really wanted her to wear something. I would have cropped a bit more off the right side but maybe not. It's very good in it's current state. I also like this border even though its very thick. It gives the photo a mounted on a wall feel. 8

Lighting is good and I like the interplay of shadow/light here. Good catchlight in the eyes and she certainly is a pretty young lady! Skin tones are exceptionally good. I also like the snapshot appearance with the heavy whilte border and the slimmer grey border gives it a touch of class. Though she appears posed, it's does not look unnatural. Job well done! 7

Something about the direction the model is looking that looks a little off to me. I think if she were looking directly at the camera or at a greater angle away from the camera the picture would be more powerful. I am also not a big fan of large frames, sorry. 6

This is a well-taken portrait with lovely soft lighting, a good use of props, wonderful composition. The only thing that doesn't work for me is her expression - I can't tell what mood she's in and hence I don't connect with the portrait on an emotional level. Technically a beautiful portrait though. 7 (//www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=129433)

This photo has great lighting and clarity. I think some of the right should be cropped though, so she is less centered. I normally don't like big borders but in this case I think it works really well. 9

The model looks a bit bored, which for me it adds to the picture... I really like this, makes a strong first milliseconds impression too! On the downside (I thought about it for a while before I found something bad to say for the picture) the head band is black and white which make it difficult for someone to focus on her eyes without being distracted by it.

What a lovely portrait, great soft atmosphere and a very good choice of props and colors. And a beautiful model. Nice soft light distribution on the background as well and a border which really adds to the image. Fantastic. I personally love tight crops and wonder whether a slightly closer crop on the right side would have made it even stronger, I would have tried to crop out up to the black shirt, no skin showing.
