 What is there to say... So many people lived this, are living it right now. It leaves scars which can never be erased, even if you wanted to.

A negative way of approaching this challenge. Life's not always positive.

That's a good way of interpretation; and a powerful one at that.
In my humble opinion a slight low key would make it more impactful - Dark side, Dark Image; just my thought. May be you can give it a try by post-processing again :)
