This was a difficult shot to take so I'm really happy it did well. There was a very short window of time before the sun would get into the frame making it nearly impossible to get the proper exposure, so I really had to make every shot count. This frame was taken on the 3rd and last morning before the submission deadline. Here are the best shots from the 1st and 2nd day:
Day 1 - I like the clouds but the stairs were just too tilted.
Day 2 - Stairs are more level but the sky is kind of boring.
Fortunately, I got a really good take on the last day. :)
Some other shots that I considered entering before I got the idea to take the one I went with:
…Lastly, this is a quick edit with the Advanced Ruleset:
Thanks again!

congratulations Mark, amazing tonal quality for a minimal (i.e. no) editing... and Bear is right, much prefer this version, I don't need any details in the foreground
Really nice photo, exposure here is absolutely spot on, composition is beautiful, and the overall effect is awesome. Hope to see this on the front page.
For me, the title, the "placement" of the objects within the composition, as well as the glorious sunrise all speak mysterious volumes about the day to come, the world as a perfect notion of human creation, existing because it has been thought about, given purpose.
