Challenge: Accidental Letters III (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Apple iPhone 4S
Date: Feb 22, 2013
Date Uploaded: Feb 22, 2013

7.12 on the first day. Lets see if that holds up.

Aimee scored tickets to Disney on Ice for this past Sunday. As we were driving downtown I saw this fire escape and told her it would be good for this challenge. Yes, I did win the blue in the last letter challenge with a fire escape - but this one is a different fire escape ;) We came back around to it after the show (which wasnt nearly as painful as I was expecting it to be). Hopped out with Aidan and I had him climb on up to take a seat. Aimee wasn't super pumped about me having him go up, but it looked safe enough for me. He took a seat and I popped off 4 shots with my iphone and we were done. In the back of the building were two parked Deloreans. Check out my Facebook page for pics of that.

As far as editing goes, I did an initial Instagram edit but it looked pretty poor. So I did the entire edit in Photoshop this time. Started with alot of skew to get the lines right. The angle I was shooting from was not the best. After a crop I stuck it into this new action manager I purchased recently from TotallyRad called Rad Lab. Really fun program. It has about sixty preset actions that I can place on the image and then tweak each action with simple sliders. I can add different actions on top of one another and tweak each one individually (or turn them off alltogether). And when I am done I can save that "recipe" for future use. Finishing out the Rad Lab provides me with a new layer with the edit. Nice program. Worth a play with their trial version. A little extra dodge and burn and away it goes.

I initially had this as a color image but swapped to b&w near the end. Not only did I prefer the b&w on this image over color, but it also differentiated this one from my previous one. And maybe if I am lucky I can have a new top image in the iPhone 4s category.

Haha! I'm not the only one to make my kids do strange things, but I've never sent them up a strange fire escape... Excellent thought! (and great shot. :)

Congrats!

Love the tones here and with all the detailed lines in the brick work, it looks good at this small size. Typically I would see some jaggies in there, but this is done nicely. I think the center is a little too crisply sharpened and conflicts with the blurred edges. But I do like that technique to help create the focal point.

So, I decided to take another look and feel like this stands on its own. This is excellent. The success of this image depends entirely on the child in the pic. One of my pics to ribbon. Well done.
