A superb technical photo. Still photography reveals much about nature to me. It is especially good to see here in a moment how particles and heat move. I never get tired of looking at this shot.

After seeing the wagging finger in Kiwi's original, I looked more closely here for fun details hidden in the smoke. In yours I see a face - upper left. Do you see it?

I like it...also my number 1.

Congrats on the personal best Bongo! While you just missed a ribbon, you can be proud that you topped the 7 mark AND scored the 10th highest rated photo ever taken with the Canon Rebel.

Believe me when I say this, as I have the UTMOST respect for kiwiness and his photography, but I am really shocked this did not get the blue instead... the shape, form, and depth of this one is just astounding. What a crime that you didn't get your 2nd ribbon... but that's just me bellyaching about it. It's a beautiful image! :o)

It a lot of fun to do isn't it :) I was wondering if anyone else would be doing the same kind of shot, actually I was surprised there was only one other person... Congrats on the greeny :)

Who had the audacity to copy Kiwinesses idea?

I did.
This is a tribute shot to an excellent photographer whom I admire and aspire to achieve his level of expertise.
I loved "Fingering Ghost" and had always wanted to try a similar shot. Along came the Smoke Challenge which proved to be an excellent opportunity. Tried different things...lighting etc...and loved this one.
What a wonderful learning experience and I am so pleased with the result.

Thank you Gary, (Kiwiness) you should take pride in knowing you inspire others. Your inspiration took me to a new level....I broke the 7.00 score barrier!

Looks a bit like Kiwiness's shot, well done on the green ribbon.

Wow this alsmost looks like glass, wish I could see the source though. Possily cropping it a bit closer to make the plume more dramatic.

Wow! This has a very interesting look to it. It almost looks more like plastic than smoke. Super job!

This is by far the most beautiful and provocative entry in the challenge, IMHO. The lighting is superb, the composition is appealing, the exposure is perfect... all I can say is that this shot ROCKS!!!!

Beautiful and sensual smoke pattern. The orangy area at the bottom is really effective. Dark background perfect.

You and "Bulb Burner" must have collaberated! :-) How could two such similar and fantastically beautiful images have ended up in one challenge? It makes it so hard on those of us who pride themselves in being able to discern differentiating and distinctive details between comparables in rating images. I hate to give multiple 10s because I want to pick out the very best one each time and give it the top score. It's hard to comprehend that there are multiple images EACH deserving of a 10 or even higher.

Love it, sharp yet smooth and perfectly fits the challenge :) I have this down for a ribbon and would love to know how you created this effect.
On the web I think you have the right crop to show the detail in the smoke, as a print I'd like to see a little more space on the sides and top

This has the feel of liquid rather than smoke... I love the colors and the undulating shapes. Way cool.

I like the lighting. I really loved the first time I saw this concept in kiwiness's portfolio. The execution is perfect here.

Quite beautiful. Broken lightbulb?

09/13/2004 04:40:37 AM
Very like one of Kiwiness's shots, though the lighting is poorer here. That front flash is rather strong - and rather harsh; use of a reflector might have softened that light a touch, to remove those hard shadows.

lightbulb? looks very alike kiwiness's finger ghost

That is really something! I haven't seen a 'solid' smoke like this! How did you do that?! 10.

so far this is the best of these types of inverted (im guessing) smoke shots on this challenge.
