Bull Elk. Native Americans called them wapiti, which means, "white butt". This is a very large bull. In February, when there are few tourists, the bulls come out of the forest. I had to work fairly hard to hike to a spot for this angle and background. This is a 6x6 and would be called a "Royal". A 7x7 is an "Imperial". An 8x8 is a "Monarch".

He looks very proud, like he is the king of the forest. Like others have said, I love the contrast between his rack and the background.

Royal sounds about right for his stature and expression. What a gorgeous animal! And so beautifully captured.

6x6 refers to the number of "points"? So beautiful, so majestic! I'm so happy you shoot them with a camera.

that is one handsome elk - you can tell he likes himself!

You are fantastic at this type shot - with just the right amount of foreground and background elements to separate, yet simple enough to show the main subject in such a majestic way

Beautiful Elk! Looks like he's losing his winter coat. Perfectly taken as always.
At 400mm, I guess you still had to get fairly close. I wonder if he heard your shutter click - he looks very alert.

A fine rack (is that right?) and so beautifully highlighted against the darker background. This is a stunner for lighting, pose and natural beauty, Richard.
