Challenge: Backlighting (Basic Editing I)
Camera: Nikon D70
Location: Biblical Gardens - Warsaw, IN
Date: Sep 4, 2004
Aperture: f/4.5
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/500
Galleries: Portraiture
Date Uploaded: Sep 6, 2004

My first entry in a couple weeks.

Photo from my recent model shoot. Shot at about 9am, so the sun was shining from directly behind the model. Used a gold reflector in front of model to warm up the skin tones.

Adjusted levels, curves, contrast, slight NI pass, USM.

I'm interested in seeing if the voters see the backlighting, since it is not overly exaggerated.

A very nice portrait shot, but doesn't really appear relevant to the challenge, even though the sun appears to be behind her. Your use of fill flash negates any element of shading or relief that would have been produced by the back light.

Good composition. Together with the smile of your model it makes the photo work. Judging by the shadow underneath her head I guess you used fill flash?

Because more light seems to reach the arm it is overly bright compared to the face (only just). Perhaps off-camera flash from underneath (wire, remote, slave) would get rid of the shadows (not that they are too bothersome, don't get me wrong) and bring more balance between the skin of the arm and the skin on the head. An alternative suggestion could be: Shoot as you did now, but use a reflector (sunlight reflection) from underneath to bring more balance.

Anyway, nice work. 8

Beautiful model. Well lit in the front, plus the highlights in her hair from the back. And I like that you positioned her arm/hair/head to avoid a "blowout" from what appears to be water in the background. Good luck in the challenge!

A good portrait but I can't see the backlighting, there are no shadows in front.
