Kruger National Park
30 years of African safari bush experience makes one sit in a hot car in the reserve (engine off, no aircon, no man made noise) and watch and listen and wait for the wild to offer you that one magical shot. It's a regular pastime of mine :) Join me if you ever head this way :)

The family were playing in the water for hours and then suddenly they stopped, got out and went over and starting caking themselves with dust whilst wet. Kills the parasites you see.
Then without a sound the Bull, previously unseen, emerged from the bush, as silent as a cat. He walked past his family, ignoring them, then one by one they stopped dust bathing and followed him back into the bush. No trumpeting at all.

It is a little known fact that Elephants communicate with one another with a rumbling noise emanating from their stomachs. We could hear this, engine off, parked almost 100 meters from them...no trumpeting, just low frequency rumbles. With windows open and sensible clothes it's not that bad and a cooler box full of cold ones...it's how we roll :)

Thank you for the story that goes with this great shot. I admire the incredible patience & endurance of wildlife photogs. I can see how richly it pays off.

Nice Harvey. I know how difficult it is to get this clear an image at that time of the day.

Must use my Wild Card again. Remember that we are on your way to the KNP, if you ever need a place to stay.

Stumbled upon this thread - hope you don't mind my butting in. This is very special. I love the tones, the dust, the back lighting, the silhouette . . .

This is stunning! I can't get enough of this one. While the thought of sitting in the heat for so long does not appeal to me in the slightest, I can see that it was worth the wait. Perhaps I'll try it sometime.
