Stunning capture, Karen. Both the motion blur on the wings and the crisp detail on the stopped action body and head work perfectly for me. Congratulations on the top ten.
Thanks everyone for all the comments, Harveys right it was taken at a feeder, it hangs right outside of my kitchen window. I love the hummingbirds we get a lot of them. The lines are from the screen in the window since I knew what caused them I did not think of them being a issue next time I will know better. :)
I hereby challenge Harvey to get a shot like this... with or without a feeder... as long as the feeder is not in the shot.
It is a great shot, with good technical ability yet without the banding I'd have given it +1 more at 8.
I have BiF images but they are from much more erratic flight paths than known flight paths. Challenge accepted, but it will take some time before I can get out to a place where our Southern African hummers are to be found, and that's a rather far and expensive trip for me so may take a while to plan and get there :)
On images like this, I like the slight motion blur of the wings because it denotes motion. Super job on the sharpness of the eye, head feathers and gorget. We don't have rub-throated HBs in Colorado. We do have broad-tailed HBs. Those have a gorget which is more red. I checked the id books and apps. Your more orange-red colors are accurate. 7
Wow. Just wow. Focus perfect where it needs to be, soft where it needs to be. Wing movement enough to suggest movement without being blurred to non-existence. Excellently applied vignette. My one critique is that I can see black & green horizontal lines, but only to the bottom right of the bird. One of my top scorers so far.
Stunning stop motion and clarity on the eye specifically. Good comp. Not sure about the banding in the BG? What always concerns me about hummer shots is that they are attracted in(to) artificial feeders and thus it is relatively easy to prefocus and snap away. I prefer to see a flower with the bird. Still a 7.
