This feels a little overedited to me but was the only way to get the sky with the grain.
The wheat up close looks weird too due to how the lens captured things, which was exacerbated by editing. Not thinking this will fare well...
Post challenge: This is an image taken southeast of Fort Collins of the High Park fire. The city I live in is actually totally under the plume here. The perspective makes the city disappear though, due to the undulating wheat fields. Here's an outtake.

i guess the "ghosts" in the front didn't put off as many as i thought :) really awesome finish derek you're on some hell of a run. this was an excellent choice, bringing the site's focus in to what's going on there. keep chronicling it (chronicling?)
When coming back to comment on this image, I've decided to change my score from an 8 to a 9. You really set the scene here. The viewer gets a great feel of the scope of the location which is a breath of fresh air in this challenge. The tones are subtle and the foreground blur is minimal. But this image is equal parts smart and striking. It is in a class all it's own. A clear ribbon winner imo. Very well done.
Oh, dear :-( Wildfires are SO destructive, at least in the short term. Interesting contrast with the growing fields, though it occurs to me that the contrast would be even more dramatic if the fields were greener. Never mind if they weren't in reality ;-)
