I think the reason this image went underrated is that it only works with the title, it does not convey a "dead end" per se, without that comment/description.
I like the story, though. Plus, the composition and technique are right on: sharp focus on the boy, a lovely DOF, saturation and square crop with subject slightly off-centered.

With the shallow DOF, the road ahead seems long... especially when one considers his wee size. So... it doesn't seem like a dead end at all...
