When I look at John's pictures I am as much struck by what I don't see as what I do. He very often removes everything that isn't the picture, sometimes to the point of discomfort. What's left is what's true and imperishable.

The way to approach this essential challenge is to think of a thing and then distil it until it's nearly gone. So concentrate not on what you can show, but more on what you can't show while still coloring (more or less) between the lines.
