I am not very convinced by this shot. Perhaps it's too even. Perhaps it looks a bit like a snapshot, a family pic.

the subject looks too self-conscious (camera-conscious). otherwise, it's a beautiful shot.

Image lacks sharpness, n focus seems to be on the wall, really don't like the white bag on the rear wheel and don't like the helmet on the handle bars either, there seems to be a pile of crap behind the front wheel, don't like the crop very much either the way it chops off front and rear wheels, this would of got a 5 poss a 4 from me, theres too many distractions and i don't feel like there's any relationship between the guy and the bike or the guy n the image viewer.
Imo this would of been better if the guy had hold of the helmet, was holding the bike (instead of leaning against it !) or sat on the bike giving a link between the two subjects, i like the black n white conversion and the backdrop is also nice, a sharper image with a better crop n maybe the handle bars turned slightly to give the image some depth with a clear link between your 2 subjects and it would of easily been 6 or 7 maybe 8 from me !
Just my honest opinion hope that its in someway helpful !

Great light and shadows in this natural light setting. The brick wall is a great backdrop. But I agree with others about the sharpness. Pulling the subject off the wall would have helped. Your exif info shows you at f6.3. So the field of focus extended further behind the subject than in front of him (distance depending on you focal length any where from infinite to 1 1/2 ft.) creating the sharper wall.

I think you did well with the full length portrait, however I am torn between whether it should be oriented portrait or landscape. This is through no fault of your own. There is a conflict to me with the horizontal width of the bike and the vertical height of the person. It seems to be somewhat out of balance and weighted heavily at the bottom. The only way to change that is to reorient the bike so that he and the bike are both facing you to get only the front plane of the bike, or changing your position by shooting at him down the length of the wall.

Not sure what I would have given this in voting but I would like to say a 7. I love the lighting and am a fan of black and white. I think the centered comp works well for this shot. Not a WOW shot but still a very well done image.

If you are gonna go with soft focus then I feel everything should be in soft focus. The sharpness of the wall pulls my eye to the right. He's a pleasant looking fellow and this is a nice candid, but for a FS, this would not engage me much. I'd give it a 5 or a 6.

Commenting for the critique thread - I don't actually see a whole lot wrong with this image. For a free study my starting vote would probably be a 7 then adjusted based on the strength of the competiton.

The deep shadow in the alcove draws my gaze a little, like I'm trying to find what is lurking in the dark, but it's not a real big issue. The setting is fine, and suits the shot, though I agree the centre composition detracts a little too. Finally, the it white saddle bag also draws the eye, maybe a bit of darkening on that to make it less impactive on the image as a whole would help?

But that's just being picky I guess, as on the whole I like it.

As an aside, is Bryan blind? He has a kind of distant gaze that is reminiscent of a friend that is blind.

Love the light, but to me the shot needs some more contrast and not a center crop

I love the soft light on his face and casual candid feel. At the risk of sounding like a focus Nazi, I am distracted that the wall seems more crisp than the subject.

I agree with Venser in that it would be nice to see the entire bike. I would like to see a tad more of the shoes as they go into the darkness.

I LOVE the starkenss and contrast. You did an excellent job on the b&w processing.

In a free study this would get a 4-5 out of me. Something different but not enough to warrant a second look. The front tire being entirely out of focus really bothers me. If the dude was doing something I could ignore that tire, but the fact he really isn't doing anything I scan around the image.

You said there's a story. So this guy tried to lift your bike?
