Toads... waiting to find suitable material so she can lay her eggs, wrapping them around a plant or something, and then he can fertilize them.

He is the darker, smaller one...

It amazes me how ferociously the male holds on. Just look how deeply his hand is in the female. She is totally okay with it. She swims about... with him on her back (doing nothing) until she finds the place.

I've tried to separate a couple before. I could not do it without fear of harming the male's being, so of course I quit. But, golly! So strong.

I think it's amazing, the way these creatures "know" how to survive without any books or internet or...

@ kasaba As far as I can tell, there is a place in her side for him to hold that tightly. There is no break in the skin.

I found these two in my pool... they were searching for something to wind their egg lines around... I took them in, shot them, and then let them go by the pond.

I do not keep any as pets.

I wonder if she has actually got "pockets" for his feet to fit into?
How did you photograph them? Are they in your garden and you just caught a pair or do you keep them as pets?
