Is it legal to clone out thin strings supporting something in your photo under the advanced editing rules?

You may:
clone out incidental power lines, twigs, dust specks, stray hairs, and similar minor imperfections within any capture used.......
yes you can

I don't think so, if that would fall under the rule of "changing the viewers perception of the scene". It's a fine line sometimes. I would not consider a supporting string to be "incidental".

I know others have gone to great lengths to support objects invisibly. However, I would accept the opinion of an SC member over my own.

I've done things like that and had them validated, but it's definitely risky.

It has been done many many times under Advance and passed validation so yes.

Another vote for yes. This entry of mine was validated during voting:

Hi Blue Moon,

Incidental is the key word, and changing viewer perception is the line. We have validated many similar shots; however, sometimes when peeps write to us and say "Hey, can I clone out this twig?" we look at it and go "Do they mean that big honking branch?"

You are probably fine if the string is indeed thin and just a distraction as opposed to being a prominent line in the shot, but if you'd like to be more sure you can always send a resized original and a proposed edit to us here.

Good luck in the challenge!

Will do, but how do I send both the original and the edited version if there is only 1 box to upload a photo? Do you want me to put a thumbnail version from my portfolio into the message box, or do you want me to create a new image with them side by side...??

Some people do create the new image, but it doesn't matter. I'm online now and will look for your ticket, reply to it and then you can reply back with the second file if that's easier.

Edited to fix quotes.

I thought I had a good understanding of the fishing line usage on this site in advanced editing but after reading L2's post, i'm not so sure.

A simple yes or no please; Is it allowed or not?

Give us samples of what wouldn't be accepted and what would. Frankly, I don't see how you can say yes to one and no to another for using fishing line to suspend an object.

That's just it. It's not a simple yes or no. It depends on the image and how prominent the line is that is to be cloned out.

Hi Jac, fishing line is almost always OK. I personally can't commit to every situation, the example posted earlier is a good representative of what is allowed.

And my post was about twigs vs. logs... not fishing line versus rope. :)

internet isn't staying connected for more than 1 minute so I'll have to upload them later when I fix whatever is wrong with my connection, but it is fishing line by the way.

I know there was a thread showing lots of good examples as well as much heated discussion. I just wish it were easier to find particular threads again!

This thread just got me questioning my HDR entry. Still think I'll be ok as I don't think it was more than what some twigs would be, but sent it in just in case. Here's hoping I don't have to clone my distraction back into the picture.
