Hi All,

I've been a member of DPC since July but haven't participated in anything yet- every contest seems to have an abundance of entries, and I know mine would just get lost in the shuffle. I've been taking photography classes since July, and while I'm really enjoying it, I don't feel like I'm at "competition" level with the photographers here just yet!

However, I just recently realized how extremely informative and helpful the forums can be! I'll definitely be here more often until the day arrives that I feel like I have a shot good enough for submission.

In the meantime, if you're interested in seeing any of my work so far, it's all here: //www.titoi.com

Nice to meetcha!!

Hi Andi -

Welcome to DPC! You have some very nice pictures! Looks like you enjoy hiking a lot?

I understand not wanting to enter until you are ready, and I lurked for quite a while also before submitting, but doing so has helped me to not only broaden my perspective in what to take pictures of, getting the comments is immensely helpful. Ever since shyly submitting for my first challenge, it has become very addicting. :-)

I doesn't appear you are from Arizona, I'm not familiar with the trails you mention, but the Tohono O'Odham Indian Reservation has a fairly big presence here (in Arizona) and I saw you mentioned that in your web page.

You'll like it here, many great people and the opportunity to learn a lot!

Thanks all for your comments and compliments! Tina, as for hiking, ever since getting into photography I've been much more likely to get up at the crack of dawn and lug my 10lb. tripod all over the countryside- as a matter of fact, before I became intersted in shooting if you'd asked me to do such a thing I'd have thought you were nuts :-)

I live in Atlanta, GA. During a cross country trip from Atlanta to my hometown, San Diego, we drove through Arizona and saw the "Man in the Maze" symbol everywhere and my husband and I ended up getting tattoos of it to commemorate the trip. Since then I've kind of adopted the symbol and the story of Titoi as a parallel to my life and my photography.

seanc, thanks for the words of encouragement, I appreciate it. I may just have to take your advice.

Q-jet! Nice you see ya! Your images have been doing great here I see
;-) Congrats on the mag cover too....

Your work is quite good. You should compete.

your photos are beautifully done, quite sure that you will fare well in dpc...Just a suggestion for your website though, can you make your images larger for viewing? Was quite impressed with your sunset shots but a little bit disappointed upon viewing them because the image is a bit too small to appreciate the details... =)

Thanks fdpiech and guobin- good to hear that folks think I'm "worthy"!

Guobin, I've been trying to decide what the best pixel size and size in kb are for my images- I don't want the photos to be inhibitive for dialuppers, so I've been keeping them all at 30k. Originally I was posting the images at 640x426, but at only 30k the detail got really mushy and the skies got quite blocky, like here: //titoi.com/data/greenash.html

That's why I started making the photos 400x266, because 30k allows for a lot better detail in an image of that size, like here: //www.titoi.com/data/fallmorn.html

What does everyone consider a happy medium for resolution and kb?

In regards to size and resolution - I usually make my images 650 x 500 or somewhere along that line, and my size is usually 35 - 40k

Works for me :)

Hey Ahaze!

I've never taken classes and have never been much of an avid photo taker either. But I get a big kick out of entering the challenges. They are a lot of fun. If you check out my shot in my profile, you will see that my own "newbie" status is well reflected in my shots & scores. I have entered challenges with many entries as well as one with less. I find that most people enter to get better thru having others see it, rate it, and comment on their shots. I know I do. as a result my photography has gotten better, each shot a little better with a better score, however incremental.

Basically, I would encourage you to enter and give it a shot. Even if you get last place (which I have come close to more than once) I had a good time trying and it all kinda motivates me to enter the next challenge & do better. The creative juices really get going! Give it a try & good luck!

I know exactly what you mean. A year ago you would never catch me on the trail lugging the tripod and other gear along with my hiking backpack! :-)

That's a very cool story - I guess living here for 26 years I've become immune to some of the neat things around me.

Works for me :)

For DPC submissions no side may be longer than 640 pixels, nor shorter than 160 pixels. Your submitted JPEG file can be up to 150kb. We recommend saving at the highest quality you can while keeping it under the 150kb limit -- smaller and you are degrading image quality unnecessarily.

Please read the entire (full) rules before submitting as there are several significant limitations on what you can enter.

Thanks GeneralE, I will definitely get to know the rules before submitting. As for size and resolution, I was just referring to what people prefer when they visit photography websites.
11/20/2003 05:25:53 PM · #19
I see -- I've kind of adopted the DPC size as my standard -- up to 640 pixels and about 80-150kb for quality. That way I only have to size for web and print, and cut down on different versions.

I've submitted to a couple of sites (The Mirror Project, Jones Soda) which have real specific size guidelines, usually smaller. The Mirror Project limits are maximum 300 pixels and 30kb to fit their layout.

Hey Andi! Glad to see you've finally come out of hiding. :-) I haven't entered yet either, but I do enjoy the forums. Most everyone is kind and helpful - as I'm sure you've already noticed. Hope you'll decide to enter a few contests soon.

Look forward to seeing more of you here.
