For the holiday family present, we're getting a PS2. Keep in mind that the last game console I owned was an Atari 2600 when I was in grade school. My younger sister had an original Nintendo system when she was in HS. Mostly I've been playing games on the PC.

No, we're not getting the PS3 or the Xbox360 or the Wii, all of those are too expensive.

We picked the PS2, because there are a lot of games and the price is decent.

Anyway, my question is, since DPC seems to have a lot of people that play video games, what are the best games on the PS2? I'm looking for suggestions for myself, my wife and for our two boys, ages 3 & 5.

I like FPS games on the PC and games like Diablo II.

My wife doesn't like violence and blood, but more arcade action stuff.

For the kids, they like cartoon games, but we don't want anything too complicated or we'll wind up playing while the kids watch.

guitar hero and guitar hero 2, are really good for for fun but they do need the guitar controllers but you only get 1 with the game and its best played with 2, as for fps timesplitters and call of duty are a both good franchises. i myself like time crisis all three are the same as the arcade + other features though they do require the light guns which may not be good for the boys if you want to keep them away from guns. But katamari damacy and we love katamari should be good for all ages as its just rolling a ball around (alot more fun than it sounds). Though different i would urge you to play the final fantasy series (a life stealer right there)

I played the PS2 Karaoke game at a friends house once. It's brilliant fun (believe it or not!)

There are two; Singstar and Karaoke Revolution Party, they come with microphones and you compete against each other to see who's the best singer (who can reach the notes, or hold the right notes, and you score points depending on how well you sing)

you could also try ddr with the dance matts. a work out there....though alot of my suggestions need extras >< probably not great.

Second this on the guitar hero... I just bought this for my kids for Christmas. Take your kids to a best buy and watch them play it...too funny! My youngest (who has no rhythm and is 11) loves this and jams the guitar when he plays it at best buy....it's a riot to watch them play it! :)

BUZZ is AWESOME - great if you have friends round and there is a kiddies version out now as well.

For all of you, you could try 'kingdom hearts' (1 and 2) its an RPG but with disney characters. Kids might also like anything in the "Spyro" or "Jax and Daxter" series. Kids might also like "super monkey ball". I Think there are also a few 'sonic the hedgehog' games out there

'Timesplitters', 'Killzone' and 'Black' are great FPS's. But you have to get 'Metal Gear Solid - snake eater' its a cracking game!

Burnout and Grans turismo are great driving games, they missus might enjoy burnout its a proper arcade game!

Grand theft auto is amazing, but you'll have to hide it from the little ones... and probably you missus as well...

Its a great idea for a family gift. Hope you all enjoy it

Call of Duty series
Timesplitters series
Area 51
Killzone

Survival Horror titles: (M titles not for kids)(Turn off the lights and be scared)
Resident Evil
Fatal Frame (get rid of ghosts by using a camera to take their pictures)
Silent Hill

Adventure
Beyond Good and Evil (another good game in which you take pictures)

Look for the titles that have become greatest hits. Not all greatest hits are good but the titles above with the greatest hits label are the best in the series. Most of these titles can be found for $19.99 or under :)

Dance dance revolution (ddr) is a great game and loads of fun, guitar hero and karaoke are also lots of fun for the whole family. But they require some additional investments in equipment.

Okay Nico...or whoever wants to help. I need to be dragged into the 21st century. I don't have time to play games so I know nothing about them...but...I am very keen to get this DDR thing happening. I have to purchase online as none of the stores here have even heard about DDR. So tell me...what do I need? Should I get PS2 or should I get something else...and what else do I need so on Christmas morning the kids and I can have some fun.

DDR (Dance Dance Revolution)fis available on Gamecube, PS2, P21, Xbox. First released for PS1 and continued through PS2. If you purchase the PS2 you can also look for the older PS1 versions and play it on that.

Gamecube released a Mario version recently and Xbox also has a special ediition.

If you plan to play it alot I would recommend the metal pads (pretty expensive) . The plastic ones slide around a lot but if you don't mind putting some weight or taping it down to the floor it works just fine.

DDR addiction

Basically a touch pad that you follow on screen arrows and you follow it by using your feet, thus the dancing part.

There are drum games, guitar games, dj mixer games, etc that uses the same types of tools as the actual users of these professions/hobbies.

Check youTube under DDR and you will see that you are correct :P Some foks are pretty impressive though.

i would suggest that you get pro evolution soccer 6 also know as winning eleven 10 i think. That game is played constantly in my flat....like 45 minute halves so we have proper length football games :P. But since soccer isnt as popular in america it may not be that popular.

for the kids they would love LEGO Star Wars, there are two of them I think 20 bucks each, lol its a funny and fun game, you and your wife will end up playing it.

like mentioned before killzone is great... not sure how old your kids are but my little bro has a ps2 and he loves SSX, its a snowboarding game, not sure if it will be to complicated for them but its alot of fun.

I have a bunch of games, lol mostly violent ones....... my little bro has more kids games. They may like wrestling also...

I heard that a lot of mom's picked up LEGO Star Wars and couldn't put it down.

Santa is probably going the PS2 path around here too :-) I have heard good things about Kingdom Hearts and the reviews all look good - for a family type of game. I think there is a MKII also available (see - got that photography plug in here :-)

Funny - my wife picked up an Atari game as our family present. It is a new flashback piece with original controllers and a game box that has 40+ original games installed on it. Cant wait til Christmas day to play with it.

Burn Out 3 is one of the funnest racing titles on PS2 and so easy even my mother can play it. Baldur's gate on PS2 is sorta diablo-ish.
