Hey, I'm in Oakland. Someone tell me something cool to go take pictures of.

Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon at Jack London Square. Take photos of the outside then head in for a beer. Photograph the beer too!

EDIT: Oops, just checked your profile. At 19 you'd better just photograph the outside.

What types of things are you looking for? How mobile are you? Do you just want to stay in Oakland?

Take a short ride over the Bay bridge and just walk around South Market Street for a little while. If you're feeling really adventurous, make your way down into the Castro.

Or maybe catch all of the 8-5'rs doing the rat race thing in the Financial District. Sorry I don't know anything about Oakland, though.

Drive out on the Bay Bridge to Treasure Island. It's a great spot to take pics of San Francisco, the bay, the bridge, etc..

Golden Gate park near the Haight/Ashberry district always has lots of fun things to photo. Be careful at night. As far as downtown San Fran goes, try shooting the cable cars on California street around sunrise or sunset and I would bet you could get a very nice sillouhette shot. Pier 39 is another fun place... while you are in the city I reccomend picking up a burrito at Jasmines just off of sutter near taylor street. There are always interesting people to watch there (business men in suit and tie skateboarding down the street). Hope this helps!

Awesome, thanks for the suggestions so far. I've got a car to use, and a week or so without much time dedicated to anything in particular. I'll post shots here, if I get any decent ones. Oh, and if anyone has recommendations for passing time in general - not necessarily in photogenic places - let me know, too.

heh, and I'll pass the pub recommendation along to my sister.

It all depends on what you're into...

UC Berkeley - If you're into college architecture this is the place for you. Plenty to photograph or find a quite place to contemplate existence. Behind the university (to the west) is Grizzly Peak Blvd. Drive up there around sunset and there is a nice view of nearly the entire bay.

Telegraph Ave in Berkeley - Your basic quirky college shopping/eating/hangout area. In a way it's not unlike the Haight Ashbury area of San Francisco. You'll want to make your way over the UC Berkeley and Telegraph is on the south side of the campus right off Bancroft. You can find parking on the street or there is a parking structure in the area. I can't remember the street but it's easy to find.

924 Gilman - When the average person thinks of Berkeley they think of three things. The first we won't talk about, the second... well, probably shouldn't mention that either, but the third is punk rock. 924 Gilman is a very tiny all ages club at, you guessed it, 924 Gilman Street. They have shows on the weekends for $5. This is where we all saw Op Ivy, Green Day, and Rancid before they got their record deals. Great place to see the newer bands.

Pyramid Brewery - This one is for your sister. It's located directly across the street from 924 Gilman. For a more neighborhood feeling have her check out Cato's Ale House on Piedmont.

Alameda County Fair - It's being held in Pleasanton right now through July 11th. It's a pretty fun fair. If you head down there you can check out my first place award for an American Amber Ale I brewed as well as a couple of photos that were accepted. (sorry about the shameless plug) It has all the usual fun stuff, carnival rides, cotton candy, corn dogs, farm animals, art show, etc.

Dunsmuir House - If you're really into old homes you can walk through this mansion built in 1899. It's an interesting way to spend an hour or two one afternoon. A bit of trivia... the front of the house was used as Poet's Corner from the movie "So I Married an Axe Murderer". It will also be the site of the annual Scottish games later this month. I don't know the exact dates off hand.

Fire Arts Festival - If you're still around July 7-11 this is one you have to go to! It's out in West Oakland and they have fire performances and sculptures from the people that make Burning Man such a spectacular event. The Crucible

USS Hornet - A WWII era aircraft carrier. You can tour the ship and poke around on your own. It's even reported to be haunted. USS Hornet

Jupiter - This can be a great spot to eat especially if the weather is nice. They have a large patio in the back of the restaurant and great wood fired pizza. Not to mention a very nice beer selection. It's on Shattuck Ave a few blocks south of University and a block or two West of the UC campus.

Hope some of these ideas appeal to you. There's plenty more in the Bay Area, if you're looking for something in particular let us know.

Oakland Hills:
Chabot Space and Science Center

Berkeley Hills:
Lawrence Hall of Science (Panoramic view of the Golden Gate from a large plaza)
Tilden Regional Park: Carousel, Little Farm and nature study area, miniature steam trains
Berkeley Waterfront:
Pier -- even with only a small fraction repaired and in use, you can still walk quite far out into the bay
Cesar Chavez Park: former dump is now kite-flyer's destination point on weekends

San Francisco:
You may be able to get a ticket to a Giants game and check out SBC (nee PacBell) Park -- it's (sometimes) even possible to go by ferry from Oakland directly to the stadium.
The Exploratorium is a great hands-on "museum"

I'm not sure what this area is called, but you'll find a lot of tourist taking pictures here.

I don't believe anybody mentioned Alcatraz Island. You can get some great shots of the city from there

im not from ca but have been in the bay area a lot, at least once over the last 5 years or so. Something unorthodox to do is to go to Lake Merritt. Ther are some really cool crazy shaped tree barks to shoot all around it. It is sweet!
