Much to my surprise, I haven't seen this announced here yet. Forgive me if this is a repeat. The official announcement from Scott came out early this week -- but those of us who organized walks for last year's event were notified several weeks ago, but sworn to secrecy. ;)

I organized the Phoenix, AZ event last year, but I'm not planning to coordinate anything this go-round. I will try to attend one or more walks, though.

This year, there will reportedly be many more walks held per area, so even if your nearest walk fills up before you sign up, you (or someone else) can start another walk nearby. Link to submit yourself for a walk coordinator is available from the map page.

ETA - To save you a bit of reading, the date for this year's walk is July 18, 2009.

I know several folks here at DPC, in many different parts of the world, participated in last year's walk. I hope folks can play this year, too.

If anyone wants any advice or help coordinating a walk, I'd be happy to forward you my notes and ideas from last year.

- Chuck

Thanks. One of my local ones is already filled and the other isn't open for registration yet. I don't want to start my own, so I'll have to keep checking back to try and register for the second one.

Awesome it is. I am leading a walk in South Africa. Any DPC members from my part of the world feel free to join!

Just a little bump. Still no one signed up to lead in Phoenix, AZ, I see... :(

Maybe because the thought of a day outside in July scares most of us.

I heard that! Last year was bad enough, but this year he moved the date back in the *wrong* direction. You don't see me volunteering to lead this year's, that's for sure. ;)

I'm expecting/hoping it will be an early morning/dawn walk, or a sunset walk...

There's already 5 people signed up in my town, and here I was all ready to be leader and start one. It was quite the pleasant surprise.

Just a little holiday weekend bump, in case anyone missed this.

There's a walk registered now in Scottsdale, for any other Phoenix-area folks. Not many signed up yet, so come and jump on the list!

Anyone else leading or planning to attend (Phoenix or elsewhere)?

Awesome, I'm signed up for the Miami Design District, would love to see other Miami DPC folk there.

I did a search to see if anyone posted about this but nothing came up (maybe I had photo & walk as two different words) so I posted something earlier today. I am actually hoping to hook up with folks here in the West Palm Beach, FL area. I am really looking forward to this...

I thought I had seen a thread but decided it was just my senility talking :)

I'm signed up! My goal is to go with the flow: 50 people seems like an AWFUL lot!

Seeing this thread bumped reminded me to say -- there are now FOUR walks scheduled in the immediate Phoenix area (two in downtown Phoenix, one in Tempe and one in Scottsdale -- the one in Tempe is the same area were we walked last year). So, if you're a Phoenix-ownian-ist-ian-person-living-around-here -- go sign up for one!

It's a big group, but hopefully the area your leader has chosen to walk will lend itself to people spreading out and going different directions. Last year, I told my "overflow list" (people who wanted to come, but couldn't sign up officially since we already had our 50) to just show up, and we had 85+ people there.

There's no need for everyone to stay together during the "walk" itself, and people will naturally break up into much smaller groups and head all different directions. Some/Most walks have a dedicated "end" where everyone will try to meet up again, but as many groups found out last year, most restaurants and such won't let a large group like that siege the place at once, and will likely turn you away unless you've made prior arrangements. (I reserved a banquet hall for my group last year, but we even overflowed from that into the main restaurant). Some people won't even meet up at the end, since they'll find something really fun to photograph and/or simply have other plans.

Anyway, point being -- yeah, it will be a crowd at first, but everyone will spread out fast enough. The only issue with groups of 50+ really come in at the "end" of a walk, if a leader expects to get you all into a business -- if they haven't gotten it cleared ahead of time, just watch the fun! :P

Also, as I told people last year, if the walk you *really* want to go to is full, don't be afraid to "just show up," as no one will be taking attendance, etc. The only restriction will be you won't be able to officially participate in the photo contest for that walk.

Anybody here going to the Cary, NC walk? I'm living here temporarily and don't know a soul here! Would be great to catch up with some dpc'ers.

Two more days! I think it will be fun to post our two favorite photos on here after the walk. Here is a recent article on USA Today. Note that since this was written, 2,000 more walkers registered. Truly amazing!

I'll be on the walk on starting on Lincoln Road on South Beach. So far, there are 62 people signed up through our MeetUp Group, Shoot Miami.

They've also incorporated a photography contest sponsored by Tropicolor into the walk. The top three prizes are mountings of your photo on their aluminum backed and framed acrylic process. I'd definitely like to win one of those.

I was hoping for a DPC challenge this weekend that could incorporate pictures from the walk; unfortunately there are not many pigeons in S Florida. Maybe we can have a side-challenge? If 28,000 people are registered world-wide, I wonder how many are on DPC?

I'll be on the walk in Edmonton. We have a max of 50 and only 3 spots left.

I'm actually doing 2 (is that cheating?). One in Palm Beach Gardens/Jupiter, FL at 7am (should get nice sunrise shots if we start early) and another at 4pm in West Palm Beach. Nothing better than a full day devoted to taking pictures out in the Florida sunshine... ok, it might be a little hot for the afternoon one. :o)

The WPB one is full but I think there is still 10 spots or so open for the PBG/Jupiter one. I also just found out that our walk leader up in Jupiter is a new DPCer.

I must live in a photographer's desert. There are none within 40 miles of LaBelle Fl, where I live. We are pretty far out in the country here, so I may be the only one out here with a digital camera. Maybe I can hook up with fldave, who is only 30 miles away.

Just a reminder, too, if a walk near you is full, but you still really want to go -- don't be afraid to "just show up." You might not be able to enter the primary contest (not sure about the add-on contest)... Even then if you have a shot you *really* want to enter, if you contact the group coordinator, they can bump out anyone who they are sure didn't show up from the original list and put you in place (I did that last year for several folks). The main benefits and fun of these walks have nothing to do with the contests, though -- so, like I said -- just show up.

Nothing wrong at all with hitting multiple walks if you can. Going to try that myself, assuming I don't melt in the heat out here.
