Ironically I shot a cool fence shot last friday while I was out shooting for the blurry mess challenge. Not really blurry enough tho. :)

It seems that most of our fences are covered in several feet of snow! |

Here in the UK most of our fences have blown down in the wind. |

Can submissions be of railings? (e.g. the railings on a walkway, along a pier, along the side of a yacht?)
An official definition of fence is:
"a structure erected to enclose an area and act as a barrier, especially one made of wood or with posts and wire"
Railings can fit this description.
My guess is that many casual voters will not agree and will vote accordingly. :-(

The challenge description includes: Make a photograph that features a fence in the composition.
This, to me, is saying that a fence needs to be in the picture but doesn't necessarily have to be the main subject.
My guess is voters won't see it that way. (emphasis added by me)

Ours are underneath 5 feet of snow. But I think I found one but to photograph it I'll have to place myself in a not too safe spot to get the angle I want. Still pondering the idea... |

Hey, this is the first time in awhile I actually find both of the open challenges attractive.

I think railings would be fine. What I'm less sure about are low brick walls, say up to 2 feet high, that serve as partitions around/between properties. Quite common round my neck of the woods :-) |

with all those fences covered in snow and blown over and what now I shouldn't have a hard time scoring a good shot out here in the country.

That's the definition that i went by and i feel i'm getting pounded in the results because some voters don't agree with my interpretation of the definition. I've received several comments stating that it's a good picture but they don't consider it a "real fence". Go figure. |

I received this comment on my entry:
"a bit schmalz 8"
???
Wikipedia:
schmalz is rendered pig, chicken, or goose fat used for frying or as a spread on bread, especially in German and Polish cuisine. The brown fatty residue left in the pan after frying bacon is schmalz (although the melted fat that is usually referred to as schmalz has a whitish color).
fatty residue ?? |

Reading on, "In American English, schmaltz (adj. schmaltzy) has also an informal meaning of excessively sentimental or florid music or art or maudlin sentimentality. Its earliest usage in this sense dates to about 1950." That's the only way I've ever heard it used, in fact. I'd bet the commenter is an American. |
