I toured a cemetery in Santa Cruz Cuba. It semed to make eveyone nervous except myself, so I had to snap fast and get back with the tour. Even the guide talked and ran out. By the gate, followers of Santaria ( sort of a Cuban voodoo) leave coins that no one touches. A Tomb holds entire families 20+ in some cases. They do not cremate.

Today I took over 150 pics of a cemetary in my hometown - I feel I didn't even scratch the surface. I never realized shooting pics in a cemetery could be so interesting! Here are some Cuban pics

I was doing some research on cemetaries in preparation and came upon these lyrics by accident. Sort of set the mood for me...

By Bright Eyes
Title: "Oh, You Are The Roots That Sleep Beneath My Feet And Hold The Earth In Place"

I met you through a common friend
In the attic of my parents' house
And though I didn't know it then
I soon was finding out
Oh, you are the roots that sleep beneath my feet
And hold the earth in place
Each time a faucet opens
Words are spoken
The water runs away
And I hear your name
No, nothing has changed
There was this book I read and loved
The story of a ship
Who sailed around the world and found
That nothing else exists
Beyond his own two sails and wooden shell
And what is held within
All else is sure to pass
We clutch and grasp
And debate what's truly permanent
But when the wind starts to shift
Well, there's no argument
Now, I sing and drink and sleep on floors
And try hard not to be annoyed
By all these people worrying about me
So when I'm suffering through some awful drive
You occasionally cross my mind
It's my hidden hope that you are still among them
Well are you?
Oh, you are the roots that sleep beneath my feet
And hold the earth in place
Each time a curtain opens
Sunlight pours in
A lifetime melts away
And we share a name
On some picturesque grave

I might stay here in Staten Island for this one. There are lots of famous people buried here. I can also go to Manhattan, there are a zillion celebrities buried there. Should I take a Tombstone shot of a famous person? or should I stay in the box and shoot a Cemetary/Landscape photo???

You've got that great, immense cemetery you can shoot with the NYC skyline in the back, right? Seems to me that's a natural for a ribbon if you do it right...

Robt.

I missed this thread, it was pointed out to me by someone else, I don;t know of any cemeteries here like that in Staten Island, I was wondering which one you were talking about Robert. I'd like the name please.

Wouldn't it be cool if you could go down to the arlington cemetary or something like that?

and if you don't like graveyards, a monument for a war might be ok. (maybe...)

I did some checking. Apparently they built a huge mountain of landfill and the view is no more. Sorry. It was really fine at one time.

Why would they do that!? This is horribly dissappointing news.
