But from the looks of what most people submitted, this might as well have been a "free study" challenge. No offense to anyone, there are some very good pics in there.

The only reason why this is an issue is that whole n/a part on the discription. I personly like it, and how open ended it is. I am hoping for some more of these. My last two challenge entries have been cut down hard because the were to far out of the box for most, even though they were great images. open descriptions on challenges means less of that, and I think that is good for dpc

True, the opener the description, the higher average IQ will probably be. On the other hand, if a theme boils down to free study, why bother to come up with a theme anyway? IMO, the challenge in dpchallenge lies in sticking to a theme and delivering on short notice. This is also what makes DPC so different from many other photography sites

that is also true, I think SC has a good handel on things though. they don't let many of these go out, but enough to let us have a little fun.

I guess I feel the opposite when I get comments like" Great picture, love the shot, but I scored it low because it didn't fit the challenge"
It's no big deal, I am just happy to get this shot in, it is one of my favorites that I have done in awhile.

A hunter taking an aim is still.
A stopped wind mill is still.
A person getting ready to have his picture taken by a very old view camera is still.
A man with peguins standing on his hands and head is still.
A quiet night at an emergency room is still.

Another type of still...

//www.tastecaliforniatravel.com/alexander-cellars-gin-still.jpg ...which will leave you drunk and passed out on the floor. Which would result in yet another type of still... //imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/GDFCARD/GFLX37~Felix-the-Cat-Passed-Out-Posters.jpg

lol

A still is a photo of a movie scene also.

I dont see why it would be voted down. Maybe wouldnt score so well if it didnt catch the eye thats about it.

Well I was remembering the discussion from the Stationary challenge (still and stationary are very much alike in my opinion). In that discussion a lot of people said stationary would not apply to still life objects, but only to objects that are capable of movement but are still in the photo.

I've seen some idiotic interpretations before but if people vote down STILL life shots in a STILL challenge that'll take the cake for most idiotic for sure. Like what Alex said if your image stops people in their tracks you should be fine.

180 Fitness (my gym in Statesboro, GA) has a Spin class (in addition to Body Pump [i.e. weight-lifting...the one I attend], Body Step [Aerobics using one step], and a few others...

Spin is for a room full of people to ride a stationary bike to aerobic-style music concurrently doing the same work-out.

I could photograph the Spin Class & enter the photo into either contest...since the front wheel & legs of the members would be spinning, but the bikes themselves would not be going anywhere (i.e. Still.) :}

Hehe. I think I did that when I was... 16? 17? And had a camera with no zoom, no flash... basically no megapixels. Oh those were the days.

Call the "Fun Police" ... Monica is having WAY too much fun! ... cool loop, Monica! :)

IMHO - if it doesn't move, it is "Still". I really think it is that simple. I don't understand why people have to read so much into a simple word. There is no description for anyone to take apart bit by bit. Therefore, no emphasis on any particular area that the DNMC police can quote.

hmm...I wonder if I would get a DNMC if i entered dancing photos in the spinning challenge?? At least on the east coast dancing is referred to as spinning!!!!

I feel that no matter what I do I'm getting at least 1 DNMC comment in either challenge.

Yep, like an old car that is rusty and falling apart and is 'still' going.
03/25/2007 09:16:32 PM · #24
"Still" isn't just "stillness". It's also a state of not having ended, a prolonging of an event or situation, etc.

"We're still waiting for the pizza to arrive."

The n/a in challenge description means....
"interpret this as you will!"
