Noticing that many of us value a good comment even more than a good score, I would like to propose a method aiming at improving the comment mechanism. The idea is to reward those who provide good feedback. Here is how:
Announcing The Most Valuable Comment (MVC) award
Details:
1. Following every challenge conclusion, the challenge MVC contest begins.
2. In that contest, the comments given to all challenge entries are rated by DPC members.
3. Only comments given during the voting period are rated.
4. Rating is done on the image page by selecting a button besides the comment.
5. There are three buttons: "valuable", "highly valuable" and “not rated” (which is the default).
6. After a week time, the rated comments scores are published, and blue/red/yellow awards are given to the commenters receiving the highest scores.
Note that unlike the image contest, one can have multiple submissions (by commenting on multiple images), thus improving one's chances to win an MVC award.
Open questions:
1. Should comments be anonymous during the MVC contest voting period?
2. How to publish the MVC results?
For example:
a) The images alongside the MVC comment in a section on the DPC home page
b) On a separate page
c) Designated on the image's page
d) Designated on the member's page, with history stats
