I don't know if it is bad or good, for a newbie! :P

In the same boat as you! Just my second challenge entry...and think I'm sitting at 4.300. In the great scheme of things, this is probably a not very good score with most winners around 6.500 to over 7.000. But it's a start, and the most important thing is you've taken the effort to try. Got to start somewhere!

Perfect attitude. Best of luck to both of you.

Once you get a few challenges under your belt then you can aim to beat your average score. There have been members who join and get a ribbon on their first entry and there are those who have been here for years with no ribbons at all. The best bet is to enter what you like and if you really want to go for high scores just keep trying to beat your average.

My first entry here scored a 4.4838

Agreed, but if I look at the image without the title, and a reasonable description of the scene would not include something about the age of the subject, then I have to give it some more thought. I do not give a DNMC vote casually, but on the other hand, it's not a freestudy either.

Fair enough. For me it all depends on the challenge. Sometimes I am a bit more focused with my voting based on the description and sometimes I am very open but it is interesting to see how others interpret the challenge.

I was thinking along the lines of man-made objects portraying the challenge well. That is not only what I had in mind for this challenge though. What I do want to see is a subject that conveys the message of time passing. In nature, a giant Redwood tree, highly interesting rock formations, or even a detail of a stream or river showing motion or cutting into a rock bed or something similar would be great subjects in my opinion. Though I believe it is a fallacy, I can even be so open minded as to accept a photo of a quote "re-incarnated being" if you can convey the message well enough for me. The main point is that the passing of time ought to be conveyed as an idea in the photo. If it's a landscape with no motion or other interesting photographic techniques used to convey the message, then I have to say in my mind it isn't really on the topic of the challenge. Unfortunately, voting on art is subjective... All the post-modern thinkers out there can appreciate subjectivity, I am sure!

I changed my photo three times before it went up, looking for the "best one". I think from now on I have to shoot what I want to shoot, the way I want to shoot it, with the best intentions of meeting the challenge guidelines. And beyond that F*ck it.

Yup. Trying to second guess broad appeal is a losing game. Work on improving what you personally like to see.

By the way Spiffy, love the thread title. One of the funniest titles yet :-)

With an average score of 4.3xx it's clear that my picture has issues. Just wish someone would comment so that I can learn from this. Have 65 votes an one comment which was a DNMC.

Can't pretend this doesn't disappoint me. I like the image and really thought a few others might too. But then again, I recently did OK with a couple of entries that I thought were 'so-so'. I guess after 5 years here I still have no idea what appeals. Or else my work just sucks...

Thanks. I noticed that 25 minutes into voting nobody else had come up with a witty title either. I has almost given up and posted a lame thread title when that idea hit me.

Not too bad for my first challenge in well over a year.

Half way through voting at the moment you rated 70 of 140 entries (50%). I forgot how time consuming the voting process can be.

The wonders of personal interpretation....been getting 4's and 5's all along, and then my last two votes were a 7 and 8.

Thank you for your generosity whoever you are!
