I keep reading about this software: NeatImage. What is it? I did a search in the forum and come up with tons of threads that mention it, but none that I can find that tell me what it is.
I'd like to know:
1. what it is?
2. is it free? If not, how much is it?
3. I have PS7, AlienSkin4000 and Kai's PowerTools. Do I have anything equivalent, if so, what might that be?
4. Is it really amazing or just something people have been used to using instead of doing something in PS?
Please help clarify, if you can :)
Thanks much!!! Arie :)

I asked the same thing a few weeks ago . . . .I am now trying to learn that along with everything else! You can download the trial version at neatimage.com, but I have seen here that people say it isn't good to use for challenge entries (doesn't downsize well?). I am going to order the full version and use it as a plug-in with Elements. Laurielblack got it just before me, and she has used it much more than I have. There is also another free shareware that some say is better -- I have it at home and forget the name right now. There also seems to be a lot of talk here of over-using NI many times.
Dusting and glaussian blur imitate it somewhat.

You can find Neatimage here. I'm still learning how to use it but basically it will reduce noise and give your image a softer look, it removes detail so should be used sparingly. Thus far I have only used the basic settings and one or two trials with different settings. I think you can get 'profiles' for your cam???
Download it and have a play with the free copy, the licensed copy can be used as a plugin with ps, this would give you many more possibilities of use.

One of the things I like to use NI for is the smoothing effect it has on human skin...it really takes the years off! :o)
before NI
after NI
Not that my friend in this picture needs years taken off, but it really does make the skin have a more youthful glow! :o)

Yes you can - and more importantly, you can make your own profile for your own particular camera. Using NI otherwise is usually pretty much a trick - what it was actually originally written to do, and still does best IMO, is remove the noise imparted to every picture you take by your camera. Noise has become so much less of an issue these days, especially for all the dslr owners, but NI remains hugely useful for those of us still on non-slr machines.
It desn't actuallly destroy detail if its used as intended: it's just that a lot of folks never read the site, nor tthe insttructions, or don't understand them, or something.

Your too busy becoming an elements master :) when I got back into the old fotog thing I didn't think it would be so difficult. I just wanted to take pics. Take this evening, out in the garden (as usual) and ripped 128mb in about 20 mins. In the last fortnight I have about 300 images and more than 1 gb of memory (just of the garden). I just don't have the time to go through all the pics and do any post processing. Then I have to learn PS7 and things like NeatImage and then, after all that I realise that neither of this weeks challenges have anything to do with flowers!
dpc has turned me into some kind of freak!

I have seen a couple photos here I love the look of -- but others really disliked them for the smooth skin, saying it can give a plastic feel/sheen to the image. So it is a matter of your personal taste and the "effect" you want also.

I happen to like the one without the neatimage. The other looks like motion blur almost.
I like useing neatimage on flower, landscape shots that have alot of grain from low light.
