Now this brings up a question for me. Sorry, I am somewhat new(ish) here, so I might not be completely familiar with all of the site rules.
Is it not ok to PM a commenter during a challenge? I thought it was!
I have never done it myself, but I would say I probably receive at least one PM per challenge I comment in, clarifying a question I asked or thanking me for a point I made, or whatever. Yes, then I technically know who the photographer was of the picture I commented on, but at that point I have already voted and I have never ever gone back and changed my original score. |

I'm more inclined to support Spork99's view. The voting rules offer a few guidelines for commenting and I personally find those kinds of comments go against these statements, especially the "rude" part. To belittle someone's sincere effort to enter an image that meets the challenge is, at the very least "rude".
You Should: "offer constructive criticism with any vote of 3 or lower."
You May: "offer criticism, praise, or other constructive comments."
You May Not: "offer slanderous, rude, profane or inflammatory comments." |

It is OK, and I would do it, however, in this case, the commenter is anonymous, so I cannot PM them until after the challenge when their identity is revealed. |

I have been monitoring this argument since its inception... While I think the comment was in bad taste, it is, after all, the opinion of the commenter and they are entitled to it... Bringing it to the public forums, to me, only shows that you are unable to take the worst of criticisms... That being the criticism of someone who only took a few seconds to write a meaningless comment... In all honesty, you shouldn't reply in any way, shape, or form... You shouldn't P.M. the commenter, and you shouldn't bring their comment into the public realm... If you can't tolerate someone judging your photo, albeit poorly, then you shouldn't be displaying your images in a place where people can critique them... Sorry if this opinion offends you, I'm not trying to. Its just that I've had numerous comments like this, and I just feel like they are entitled to comment in any way they see fit... If they comment poorly, then it only shows me that their opinion really doesn't matter... And I must say, that I would never P.M. a commenter, or call them out publicly, because at the end of the day, if they are wrong, they are the ones who look stupid and their comment is permanent... SOOOO... next time you are surfing through photos that ribboned, take a look at a few of the moronic comments they received, and laugh at them, as I do... Think to yourself... "This guy must feel like a total douche for leaving that comment, because it ribboned and received 37 positive comments...LOL" |

So what you're saying is there's no need whatsoever for a modicum of civility in commenting yet it's in poor taste to respond?
Got it. That makes all the sense in the world.
Not.

Actually it does... If you can't take the heat, get outta the seat... What you consider civility, others may not... Who are YOU, or ME... to judge... If you are that concerned with what someone may say about your image, than perhaps you shouldn't enter it... Some of the best artists in the world have been told their worked sucked at some point, it comes with the territory... |

Perhaps people should just get back to discussing SCORES in this thread (the topic) and leave the discussion of comments to its own thread ... "just a suggestion." |

That same logic applies to the comment as well. If you can't handle what someone might say about your ill mannered and poorly thought out comment, best shut your piehole. |

Hey, I'm not the one crying in the forums about a comment... Its just that, a comment... get over it... not my fault you have thin skin... Sorry if I called you on it... |
All I said is that it goes both ways. It's the same for any exchange between people. |

*** Upon edit... I totally apologize for my post previous to this... I totally misread what you said... After re-reading I realized you were talking about the commenter, and not my post... You have a valid point... and that if one can make a comment, one should be able to defend it... I thought it was directed at me and for my reply I apologize :)***
Now, honestly, I'm still on the fence about bringing it public... but I think that if you make a comment, you have to understand that you may offend someone... I mean, I've had several people thank me via P.M. for honest comments I have left them, so I guess that works both ways... I guess me personally, I don't really care... But I can tell you that I don't make the comment as helpful :) ... Yeah... that's how I roll...

Started out above 6, but has taken a bit of a hammering today. Lots of comments which is good, most of which are constructive yet of contrasting opinions depending whether or not they appreciate the style.
And i've just had to submit a proof...

Actually a comment can still be edited after the voting is over. I have never done so but out of interests sake I checked to see if it is possible and it is. |

Looks like I've been missing all the fun over here!
re: the lame comment -- check the age of the commentor after the challenge. I've noticed that some of the younger members don't know how to phrase things and tend to be extremely blunt. They haven't figured out how to be as constructive as some of our more mature... umm, older... members. :)
I'd actually rather have the blunt, rude comment than something more politically correct. "lame" says a lot more than "it's not very inspired" or "it just doesn't do it for me." I might not like the comment, but it explains that the low vote is because of my idea -- not because of the photography, and that they really didn't like my idea. I think it says a lot.
Now, back to you regularly scheduled scores.
