Ok, I was surprised to find it, so I had to let people know.

There are several waterdrop photos at 1X, here's one of mine:

The hype about that website has been overrated for a LONG time.

 Quality is quality, no matter how biased you are towards the subject matter.

As for the image Wendy posted.

Fantastic capture. To get it all in focus like that is amazing. Perfect timing and patience.

Karen, good to see your shot got accepted, I've always liked that one.

Well, besides the fact that my response wasn't about the particular quality of any photographs, you're right.

What my response is about is the 'ethos' behind 1x.com. The idea that it is somehow a higher place of photography. A gathering of better, stronger photographs that have MORE to them than anywhere else. The idea that, somehow, because it is run by a group of people with some presumed idea of what photography should be, and a bunch of 'auditors' that choose such photography, that it's a place to be that much more proud of being a part of.

This is simply not true. All it really is is a little place for people to gather at because they're so desperate for attention and belonging and the feeling that their precious work is important and unique, that they're willing to accept any kind of hype and zeitgeist in order to do so.

You know, just like a few dozen other places around the web that allow you to feel like that. 1x just has a little bit more of a unique style to it's site and acceptance process that it put it apart, and at first, perhaps it was a little better/stronger/more picky/whatever than anything else. Not really, anymore. It's mainstream now. It's popular. It's watered-down and is no more, or less, than anything else out there.

THAT is why the site is overrated in my books, and the hype not justified.

Not because any one, or three, or 400 photos on the site don't have any form of QUALITY, but because people try too hard to believe that being a part of something like 1x.com somehow makes them so much more special.

I'm not active over there but every once in a while I'll submit something and just yesterday had one accepted so I'm obligated to disagree with you. :P

Seriously, I don't disagree but who are you referring to that's overhyping, overrating it? 1x is DPC + filtering. Over time it has probably attracted more talented people because of the exclusivity aspect but they still have their share of phonies just like here.

I'm totally with K10DGuy here--that is, until one of my shots gets accepted at 1x: then I turn on him, thumb to nose, fingers wagglin, shouting Neener Neener and sputtering raspberries.

Cuz that's just how I roll....

[pastes text into PrentenshoTranslator app]

"Upon that day, I shall swing about, with raised eyebrow, and look askance at him, with just the faintest of superior sneers. This is, you see, how I choose to translate laterally over a horizontal surface, utilizing rotational surface contacts/supports."

Oh, and another thing: I've locked in the domain names for "n"x.com, where n goes from 2 to infinity times infinity to the infinityeth power! So when that 1x thing gets all tiresome and "common" I can just rollout a bigger better one!

I may even skip over some, go all Spinal Tap and jump right to 11x.com, cuz, you know, it goes to 11!!

Acquire THAT level of taste, you soffistickated muthas!

[it is entirely possible that my coffee was too strong this morning.... or, not strong enough]

where is the hype coming from? is it the thread on here? cause this is the only place I have seen any hype regarding 1x
in my view the average photo on 1x is of far better quality then the average here.

Well... It OUGHT to be, since they are screening; anybody can put anything up here, which sorta waters down the pool, don'tcha know? Don't get me wrong, I like their pictures fine; some of then are dadgummed purty :-)

I think the hype is about right for what's there, to be honest. Not over nor under, but like the baby bear's porridge - just right.

Off to go see what Yanko's pitched that made it through...
