Can't wait to see if all the comments in the fine arts threads will hold water? Many good discussion going on about people opening their eyes to the things that they may not be comfortable with. Many talking about seeing images in a new light and gaining a better appreciation for the thing's that they would have never thought to shoot.
I have a feeling the majority will continue to vote down the things they don't understand when it's all said and done.

It could be argued that it is a difficult thing to fully appreciate that which you don't understand. :O)

I agree 100%. Just wish more people had the drive to gain the knowledge of what they don't understand before passing judgment on it.

I think a lot of people looked at each entry harder in that challenge than most other challenges. The truth is that when you only take a few seconds to look at an entry you really don't see much...Maybe this will cause more people to look at the entries harder or more than once while voting. |

Umm....isn't the onus on you, the artist to convey your message such that it can be understood?

I agree with you and in most cases comments like the one I started this thread with are made by people who can't seem to get a good vote on DPC and are angered because of it. I guess some of the more intriguing images to me get low votes even though they are technically sound (IMO) because the majority of DPC doesn't like them. I just hope that this challenge makes some forget about the vote here and do what they love to do and in the same breath I hope that some have realized that there can be beauty in the things you don't fully understand.
If your first reaction to a technically sound image is, "why would they shoot that." Take a second longer to look at it. You may see what the photograph was trying to tell you. It just takes an extra second sometimes.

Some images are at their best when they are not understood. Also, not everything has to have a message. Sometimes a pleasing image is all it needs to be.

I admit (even tho I am still newish and haven't voted much) that I voted more technically than anything. There was one image that I found completely disturbing. I know now that I voted it down because of that. I still didn't give it a 1, but a 4 because it at least was in focus and the lighting was decent. It will be interesting to see what the photographer was getting at.... IF they tell us in the comment area of their entry. Often times, people don't tell us what they were getting at so that we know after voting ends what the heck they meant.

I'm not sure that it's this challenge, in particular, that will change people's minds, but it's challenges like these that make a difference. When I started here a year ago, I wasn't interested in the abstract shots, the blurry shots (whether from camera movement or just oof), etc. It's the challenges like this one, and the camera movement one, and the abstracts, that have helped me gain an appreciation for the shots that are more out of norm. The more we challenge people to step out of their comfort zones, the more they (we) grow as photographers. That's why I enter almost every challenge, even if I have no interest in the topic. It's about learning and growing. And while it may look like my work hasn't changed that much, my appreciation for others has widened immensely.

What if I understand it, and still don't like it?
ETA: ALSO, what if my understanding of it isn't the photographer's understanding of it, and I still don't like it? Sucks to be the photographer! :D

As long as it's someone else's, and not mine, that's fine!

No. Some artists create works to satisfy their own inner needs. Whether it conveys a message to someone else is irrelevant. But if you are this kind of artist, please don't complain that no one buys your work (or gives it high votes on DPC).
More to the point, a lot of art appeals to a limited audience. There are people who think their kids can do drawings that are just as good as Picasso's. They don't have the background to appreciate what Picasso achieved. This is especially true of much contemporary art; it really requires some prior knowledge to understand and appreciate.
If an artist wants an audience, then yes, the onus is on them to convey a message to some audience. But they have no responsibility to make their message understandable to everyone. |

It's pretty obvious that the voters don't understand what I was trying to convey. But if even a couple of people "got it" or were curious enough to try and "look further" then it was worth posting. |

You are probably right Citymars... the art spectrum is long and beautiful.
