Well the title pretty much says it all, How do you go about fixing a blown out area of sky in Basic editing? I'm not even sure this can be done... Any and all help is appreciated, thanks for looking... Oh I have CS4 and Gimp...

Did you shoot RAW? If so, you MAY be able to get some data by editing in Prophoto RGB, which is a very wide space. Make the edits then convert to sRGB....don't forget to convert back to sRGB....for the love of everything, convert back to sRGB.

If not, chances are, the blown highlights have been saturated and thus no information can be recovered.

Easy, re-shoot the image.. :)

Failing that, try adjusting the curves, pay particular attention to the upper right corner, bring that down, and maybe you'll find some detail... Otherwise, you're done. (unless of course it's in RAW, then you could do a bit more trickery with RAW conversion)

Echo that... try to recover as much in RAW as possible, if you shot RAW. If not, and there is no other white in the photo (yeh, I know, small chance of that) then you might use a global adjustment to tint the sky, but you will also tint anything else that's white.

Okay, then I'm going to throw one more at you guys... How do you fix barrel distortion??? These are both questions I've had for awhile, but just didn't need to ask because I hadn't stumbled across the problem... I actually found a different shot that I want, because the blown out highlights are just too bad, but in this shot, I've got some wicked barrel distortion... I know this should be somewhat of an easy fix, but I just don't know how to do it... Thanks again

What lens did you shoot the barrel with ;-)
Seriously though, fixing barrel distortion is not allowed in Basic. If we are talking outside of basic, then it's actually not as easy as you'd think. How you attack it really depends on what tools you have available. There are some Photoshop plug-ins that can do a pretty darn good job.

Try doing the entry as a b/w. That can often neutralize the appearance of a blown sky. Assuming the shot is one that works well in b/w.

Shot with a 10-20mm sigma... I just got the lense, and at 10mm there is some wicked barrel distortion... I think it looks cool most of the time, but it throws off the composition of the image... Alright, well, guess I'm going to enter my comedic shot...LOL
