I'm not sure if we've done anything like this before, but how's about a challenge where we have to take a photo of a subject, and the viewer/voter has to guess whether or not the subject is the real thing, or a model. The object of course, for the photographer, is to trick the viewer/voter into thinking what they photographed is the opposite. So if you photographed an R.C. plane, you are going to try to make it look as real as possible. If you are photographing a real plane, you are going to try to make it look like a model one. The viewer/voter then leaves a comment whether they think its real or fake...
In the challenge details, the photographer would reveal whether the subject was real or a model, and preferably take a snapshot of the image that proves it... I think this could be interesting, and it leaves the photographer with allot of options... I mean, you could shoot a real model, and make her look like a mannequin, or vice versa... Car models, town models, trains, boats, and anything R.C. etc... Anyway, what do you guys think??? We could even have a side-challenge to see how well we can guess the correct subject... |

It's a pretty cool concept, but I'm afraid it would be dominated by the tilt/shift "miniature" effect that fascinates so many people...

I think would only add to the difficulty of guessing real or model... |

A very good idea, Ashley, but afraid I agree with Bear on this one. Tilt/shift lenses and/or knowledge of some PS techniques that roughly replicate tilt/shift would probably win out. |

Well, How's about basic editing perhaps? I don't think tilt/shift is legal in basic is it?

Hmm I really don't know...I suppose the editing steps needed to get the tilt/shift would be illegal. But to my knowledge you can use any lens available to you to shoot. :-/ |

It's a lovely suggestion and I didn't mean to shoot it down; it's just that the cynic in my figures it'll just be another excuse for "fake miniatures"... I remember when we had the tilt/shift challenge, nearly every entry, and all the top scorers, were going for the miniature effect, and that's just a specialized subset of what tilt/shift CAN do in the right hands, but nobody, hardly, cared about that, and it depressed me and caused me to get this disease called "rammbling whinitis", which as you can see his still lingering :-)

No worries, cause you're absolutely right... There would be a ton of tilt/shift stuff. You know I still haven't learned how to do that...LOL... That's why I stayed away from that challenge... |

It would be cool if everyone had the technical ability and talent of this guy;
Paul Smith's Models, on Flickr
Even Bear might enjoy seeing these old classics.
