It was Deb Melethia who first reminded me what it was that we're here to do, and how we should go about it.
She actually started a thread, which can always be revived, called, I believe, the "I love my shot" thread, where we would take a challenge entry, and upon linking in the thumb, explain where we were coming from, and what we had hoped to convey with the image. It was both rewarding, and cathartic, to quite a few of us to put into words and thought what couldn't be conveyed during the challenge.
Deb claims she has no special powers, but she is always a quiet, warm voice of reason, and she has inspired many of us with her attitude and wisdom. She certainly helped me to teach myself how to seek, and find, the photographer within, and to be comfortable with that. I've not had a bad challenge entry since, regardless of a score. I only enter the images that I am content with, and that I have completed my process upon, from snapping the shutter to upload. If I'm unsure of my finality, or just am not happy with my image, I take a pass. Oddly, it seems for the most part that since I stopped shooting for the scores and to please the voters, my work has improved. Go figure!

I would love to see some stats to prove your comments about people purposely voting low. I wish Langdon would provide some real numbers to prove this troll thing ALL of you seem to consistently whine about. In a vote structure like we have here at DPC it is totally normal to get low votes and high votes.
A low vote signifies your photo is not well liked.
A high vote signifies your photo is well liked.
Pretty easy to understand but some insist on not understanding how a vote is compiled.
Why don't you whiners ask Langdon to eliminate the 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 vote. That way you'll all get votes to your liking and this place will become a haven for great photography in the process because we all know that if a photo ranks high at DPC, IT MUST BE TRULY AN EXCEPTIONAL PHOTOGRAPH! /end sarcasm |

When a voting average swings back and forth wildly in a short period of time with no new votes, or with only one or two, and it happens consistently throughout a challenge, that's voting abuse.
I, among others, have been submitting tickets to that effect, and I have received notice that there *IS* a problem and it is being dealt with accordingly.
I don't whine, I'm not all that concerned about the score, but when it swings wildly back and forth in such a manner that I cannot trust the score at all, and it happens in the voting cycle across a couple of challenges, then it just pisses me off because I have no idea where I really stand.
Maybe I'm all wet, but I feel it's reasonable to expect that my score is an accurate representation of what the community actually thinks of my entry. As of right now, in two challenges, I really have *zero* idea as to the accuracy of my score.

Bingo. Some people will vote on how well they like or dislike the photo, which is different from whether it is good or bad. |

That's how it's supposed to work but it doesn't always work that way. Two examples:
1. It has been mentioned previously in this thread that there is a voter who is obviously voting low. I won't say how, but I was able to determine who that voter was and I've been watching his average vote cast undulate from just over a 1 average (with just over 250 votes cast) to an average of over 8.5 (at about 750 votes cast), back down to 4.7307 (apparently, several hundred of his votes were removed), and is currently showing an average of 6.0157 (votes cast back up to 762). Maybe he is having fun seeing the effect that his extreme voting is having on his average or on the comments in these scoring threads, but I don't think that he is changing his mind about how well he likes the images he is voting on.Originally posted by Jac: end sarcasm |
2. One technique to voting that some people employ is to initially categorize all images as low, medium, and high by assigning votes of 1, 5, and 10. Later, they will go through these three categories and further refine their scoring across the voting spectrum until they are finished. They may not have any images remaining with 10's or 1's when they are done, but the scores will be changing during the voting process. Depending on how many people are doing this simultaneously and how many votes have been received during this process will reflect in what people's current scores are and how much they fluctuate.
I do believe in trolls, I do believe in trolls ;) But I don't concern myself much with them because it all averages out in the end. |

There are definitely trolls - I don't think there are as many as we think though. On my entry (for Eggs) I have a sub-5 score. I couldn't be more dissapointed. However, I know it just is what it is and although I have seen one troll's profile that voted (and left a pseudo nice comment)and they are definitely troll. Here is their profile info (minus name of course):
Challenges Entered: 0
Votes Cast: 121
Avg Vote Cast: 1.9752
Votes Received: 0
Avg Vote Received: 0.0000
By the way, they signed up March 3, 2010. Big surprise :-) |

Amazed I haven't received at least one comment.
Not doing as well as I thought it should be. Thought it would at least be in the high 5s. Oh well. On to the next challenge if I can get my creative juices flowing. |

I have a feeling lots of low votes will be scrubbed and that scores will jump on rollover ;)

Hate to burst a bubble, but I just took a look for myself and there's a handful of newly registered users with votes that are certainly under the 20% minimum and are quite HIGH (avg 8.xxx or above). |

A decent average for a freestudy, but I'd thought it might be good for something a bit higher. Ya' never know.

Thanks Jeb! :) I'm going to do a search for that thread and do some reading. I guess I missed it during my hiatus but, it sounds like it is an inspiring set of thoughts that would do me a lot of good to read too. :)
I'd like to actually like my camera again. I once did have a love affair with it! LOL |

Actually, I have a grand and glorious score going - it's above my February average of 5.0138 so I am tickled pink! |

Nice...you're doing better than I am at the 100 vote checkpoint. I guess I missed the mark on this one, but I won't complain about a 5+ score. Too many on here expect a 6 and 7 photo every time out of the gate, and I think that's a bit much. Of course that's a general statement Steve, and in no way directed at you....just some rambling thoughts. LOL.
