"semi-submerged for 270 hours" - that's over a month of 8-hour days.
Great photos, but couldn't a remote have done the same thing without the hook worm, etc.? |

Wow, nutter! Surely set the camera up with a remote screen and trigger :) |

But, then he would have only had the images, not the "story." and without the "story" the images may or may not have been seen.

Great images. It's almost scary knowing you're so close to animals that would eat you in a second. |

That is dedication, I hope he makes a lot of money off the back of this. The photos are outstanding as was his parasite count!

It will certainly shorten his life expectancy. I don't think you really get over malaria |

I agree that the pictures are stellar, I just wonder why he didn't wear a drysuit. Seems like that would have helped keep the parasites down. |

Maybe he thought the lions would be more tempted to help themselves to a serving of Photographer Thermidor ... |

I love this comment on that site:
"Having spend some twenty years of my youth in Kenya, and being born there, I think this photographer is a total idiot. What is so important to photograph lions drinking. There thousands of other such images available in various magazines, like National Geographic etc. That are far better in terms of such animal behaviour and others in action."

Hahahaha.
IMO he did a great job with the pictures. but couldn't that be done with a 500mm lens from the other side of the watering hole?
just a thought.

If the only way the photos get attention is the story of the (idiotic) suffering the photographer endured in order to get them, well, then the photos probably don't stand on their own. The photos are good, for sure, but not so great they were worth risking death for. And I doubt he even realized he was risking death in the form it almost took--sounded to me like he felt the only danger was the lions. |

"as they cool off only metres from watchful Greg who was just 'one leap away' from the colossal predators.
'There were times when I was shaking with so much with fear I had to stop what I was doing and breathe to get myself calm."
Ummm... that's not really all that smart, is it? *sigh*
Dead doesn't take any more photos. |

Yeah. I would never try anything like that with lions. They could be dangerous.

what an incredible story, as well as an incredible collection of images. sure, anyone can armchair quarterback this guy and what he did, but there are very, very few ways to get those images without doing what he did. it's very easy to try to come up with your own way of trying to get those images, but, until you try and fail, you won't know exactly why he decided to do what he did. as far as the death-defying aspect of his project, i don't find it any different than anyone else who puts themselves in harms way, whether it's rock climbing or parachuting or whatever...just because you wouldn't risk your life isn't any reason to be judgemental. personally, his collection immediately when into my damn-i-wish-i'd-shot-that pile...

Like street photography, if you snipe from far away with a long lens, it looks like exactly that. These don't and they're amazing.
For me, they're in the I-wish-I'd-shot-that-but-there's-no-way-in-hell-I'd-do-what-he-did-to-shoot-it category |
