I don't have one but ....

You are out and about and get a sensational photo, one a newspaper or TV company would kill for. A plane crashing, an explosion, an attack, the usual sort of netaive stuff that the newspapers hunt for.

What do you do? Does anyone know the process here?

If you do approach the XYZ Broadcasting Company and sell them the photo, does that mean you can't also approach the ZXY Company? If you sell it as a frontpage photo to one newspaper can you sell it to another (as I have often seen the same sensational photo in more than one paper.

What stops you giving it to mob A and mob B just using it from their broadcast anyway?

Sometimes these sort of images are time critical, huge news today, but boring tomorrow.

Anyone had any experience with anything like this?

As I said, I don;t have anything like this, but if I did I'd rather not then go looking for these answers, as you might miss the moment.

Well, I don't know about print media, but TV stations have systems set up for receiving photos of newsworthy events. My husband worked at the highest-rated ABC affiliate in Dallas-Fort Worth for 7 years and they had people bring in, email, mail, fax, etc. pictures regularly. Most tv stations have links on their websites for submitting photographs. If it's something really major, taking it in to them in person in a very timely fashion is not unheard of, or it might be requested by someone on the scene if you are there and are taking pictures. That is at least how it was at his station. Don't know about anywhere else. :o)

As the owner, you are free to negotiate the degree of exclusivity you grant any prospective licensee. If they want an exclusive, they will have to make it worth you while ...
