Yes all excellent and worthy winning images! Yet not one Aborigine (a real Australian icon) in sight...Funny how your countrymen never feature as subjects, or their art. This was one of three image entries I could find about Aborigines on the entire DPC site. Australia has hidden it's apartheid past very well indeed Enzo.

Well here are 4 others...and they were all taken in the last year and from Brat and I!

My images.

Brat 's images.

We haven't hidden it...if you knew anything about the Indigenous people, you would know that many do not permit being photographed. I teach 24 indigenous students who hopefully will be able to produce images of this race that others cannot access.

Well that sounds like a challenge!

I think Judi might have an image of an aboriginal person, but not sure. Might have to give it a try in a future challenge.

Yay for Australia

1. You might not have but your government has for years as you should well know by having Indigenous People as your students and knowing more first hand than the average SMH reader or Channel 9 viewer. Years of chasing them over cliffs and forced removals, untreated foreign illnesses and lack of basic human rights decimated them. Not so far removed from South Africa... except here they raced from a few million to 45 million in the space of 120 years or so...
2. I am not oblivious to the Aborigines plight. I lived in Australia for 12.5 years. I went to school with many, and witnessed Australian's racism and bigotry first hand. In the late 70's I visited the sites where the English chased them over cliffs to save bullets during colonisation. At the excursion, the Teachers were all very proud of this cruelty and the kids condescending and openly verbally rude. The lone Papua New Guinean and Aboriginal kids in the class were wincing at the back of the group. The English wiped them out and the colonists poured in so that today they are in the minority, interbred, and the latest population figure is 517,000 and under 50,000 pure I believe?
In my home-town in NSW they were all forced to stay in a Government built "location" outside of town called (sic) White City. Australia just didn't give their silent policy a name, like South Africa did.
My father employed as many as he could, those that were not destroyed by alcoholism.
3. "Many" does not mean all Judi, as you have proven by linking your own images. The site returned 3 actual images on my search for "Aborigine" and "Indigenous" in the image tags.

My point was/is that for all our subject material here on DPC, indigenous people fare poorly. Kudos to those of you who have portrayed them in your images.

Whilst this certainly isn't the place for this argument and I respect we are all entitled to our own opinions...I have seen both sides of the story. I have Aboriginal blood in me and was raised anti-Aboriginal...and this was reinforced by the disgusting behavior of Aboriginals in a town I lived in for 7 years. There are some good Aboriginals out there and if I can help just one child have a better life and maybe show the good side of this race, then my attempt is worth every minute I put into it.

You will find there are more images than simply searching for Aborigine..........Many people do not use those fields............

I find it amazing that you are so willing to take a dig into the people on this site from Australia without knowing who they are, or for any reason other than really to make another country look as bad as yours. It is a sad fact that many of the Native Tribes in many countries, including through the Americas (both North and South) were not treated fairly, and in many cases were almost wiped out..............

you will actually find that Australians are well aware of their past, the wrongdoings of generations before. However, we were not treating our Koori people as second class citizens, locking up their leaders, killing them in the streets etc as recent as the 1980s.........look in your own backyard before you try digging dirt in someone elses.

Modern Australia as proud of the country we are, we accept that previous generations made many mistakes, including the treatment of the Koori Nation. However, if you had any idea of Australia at the moment, had any idea of the steps and measures that have been made by out current Prime Minister, and current society, then maybe I would at least consider your opinion.

And the reality is that many Koori people do not want their photo taken, and especially many do not let their photo be taken in Ceremonial Dress..........

Many Aborigines (especially the Elders) do NOT allow their photo to be taken for reasons associated purely with their beliefs. That has to be respected by everyone. I am fortunate in the fact that I am hired to photograph the Aboriginals in my area and as they are coming to know me, are becoming more relaxed in their knowledge of how I take the images, what I show in the images, the story I tell in the images and where they are being used. They are very private people and are always on their guard.

Many photographers go crash-banging into their lifestyle expecting to get the style of shots we see in the Asian countries...that only infuriates the Aboriginals and makes them more on guard.

"My" country has made huge strides in correcting the wrongs of our forefathers. As a new and young democracy it and it's people are struggling every day to come to terms with it's past, and we are by no means a shining example of truth and righteousness right now, with a lot of social ill's and wrongs. I'm not digging at Australians on this site, just the lack of overall indigenous representations, rather than at Iconic white symbols as photogenic as they are.

Your forefathers did as recently as the last century and only now is your Government actively doing something about it? Whilst Australia was pointing fingers and (rightfully) placing sanctions against South Africa in the '80's Mugabe in Zimbabwe who has killed over 1/2 Million of his own countrymen since he got to power 20 odd years ago with his 5th Brigade is still getting swooned by all and sundry. He should be tried just like Saddam.

I have and we as a country have, don't be so surprised when there is actually dirt, even now, in your own, that is rearing it's hidden head. I talk weekly to friends in Australia, have kept contact with them for 25, and they are mostly in agreement, that very little has been done, even now, to right the wrongs there.
I spent 8 years in South Africa's Townships helping the poor and destitute, delivering babies, tending to the infirm, resuscitating shot, petrol bombed and panga'd fellow South Africans, and not by white police. I have looked in my back yard, I lived it. Most of the violence and death here in '93/'94 was Black on Black, Zulu vs Xhosa. In one night my crew zipped up over 100 dead and the police eventually stepped in to quell the tribal violence.

I've lived on both sides, and witnessed the injustices first hand.

I'm well aware of that but many have relented and spoken up to show their plight to the world.

I'll say it again, the Aussy shots on the front page are magnificent, as are Judi and Enzo's (and others) images of Australia's Indigenous peoples, art and way of life, but in all honesty, even in my personal images, very few make it online. I have a small school of "locals" too Judi, and they are producing images of the townships and the harsh reality of South Africa's poverty in a way that I can't. Again, Kudo's to you and other Australian's that are making a real difference.

It's a conspiracy, I tell ya'. Apparently when they talk about trolls under the bridge they are referring to Aussie's and the Sydney Harbor Bridge.
