That would be a decision langdon would have to make. But it would be a good stat to have one everyone's profile page.

What's so bad about have this type of stat in ones profile that would require an opt out feature?

Some of us suck? :-) It's good for those who are competitive and score well, though. |

The ranking a weighted more towards participation than score and percentile.
An example would be a user that is let's say 500th place with only 3 challenges entered could move up several places by entering another challenge even if their score stays the same.
Another example:
I did a quick check and the first user with an average of 5.5 was ranked 264th out of 970. Why? because they have participated more. While the highest average user is ranked 201st. Not much difference even though the highest score is a 7.8+. And there are some 5.4+ average scores ranked between 150 and 200th place.
So you do not have to have the highest score or percentile to move up the list.

That's why I'm in the 500's instead of the 800's ... |

Exactly! Because the site is not all about a users average; participation plays a big roll. And we all know that maintaining a high average gets harder as you enter more challenges.

Why do you insist on being so gray and boring? Here Scott is trying to improve the site and provide fun and exciting information to the site and everyone along with it and it seems like all you ever want to do is hang out in the past... Scott and I had planned on creating a link that users can paste into their profiles so everyone can see how they are doing year by year.

This is a great idea that gives a lot of people a lot to think about. It says more about where you are now rather than where you've been in the past. Most people claim to have improved as photographers since joining the site but their profile page average will always reflect their earlier 'learning curve' efforts. Therefore, a 'rolling rank' on your profile page sounds quite appealing - should it ever become possible... |

I think in this case, it might be a good idea. Just like the "average score received" and "average vote cast" should be opt-out (on by default) features. |

Why, what's the point in not showing it?

I've been rotating my top 5 profile photos pretty regularly lately and got my first 6 + scores this year so I know I'm making progress. Still I'm surprised to see my name in the 217th spot. Makes me feel pretty darn good! :)
Thanks for putting the time and effort into this.

Pisses off a lot of people. A lot more than watermarking or other recent changes ever could. Could also spark some pretty bad fights on here... at the very least, it'll cause prejudice.

That is either the funniest or the most stupid thing I have ever read. As if there was enough fights on here already.
If there was an opt out for any user their stats should still be posted somewhere else so other users on the site can see them.
Regardless, Scott and I have all the information from every user that as ever entered a challenge and it's all public information anyway. If anyone wanted to know any of this information they could get it with a little work. We are just organizing it better so they don't have to work hard to find it.

Why? Pisses off a lot of people - proven; can spark bad fights - good assumption; cause prejudice - it's done that in the past. |
