How do you understand this challenge, what can be the subject/object of it?

No idea!!!

I'm thinking computers, calulators, abacus, etc...

so what about emotions, love etc? They count but cannot be counted.

What about people, opinions, valuables.....vampires....environment...Sounds like a free study to me. Everyone can find something to connect it to things that count.

Again, a challenge where a good title can help to link to the image's meaning / purpose.

Not saying that bad titles give lower votes, but excellent titles can boost the voting a bit :)

I second that interpretation.
Some things can be measured, some things can't. Just because we can measure something doesn't make it more significant. These things can be different for each one of us, some things are that fundamental that they are the same to most of us, if not everyone. I think health, children, parents, family,...

Well, the challenge description quotes Einstein:

"Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted."

Seems to leave it wide open for the interpretation "Things that matter"... May run afoul of didn't-read-the-description voters, who can be expected to gravitate towards adding machines, cash registers, abaci, and the like, but...

According to WikiAnswers:

"It means not all things that can be touched and quantified matter (material goods) and that not all things that truly matter can be quantified or measured (love, hope, etc.). "

What I really wanted to do (and would, given unlimited time, funding, and studio space) would be a tax collector, something along the lines of these:

//www.free-stories.net/images/storyoflevimatthewthetaxcollector.jpg
//www.lib-art.com/imgpainting/7/5/5757-tax-collector-marinus-van-reymerswaele.jpg

... but that ain't gonna happen, so if you like this idea and have the means, run with it.

Ideas are cheap. Execution is expensive ^_^

Though challenges based on emotions and abstract ideas like this can be fun, they seem to result in a lot of disappointment. Someone's shot of, say, a nude couple embracing in an empty room - to show that they don't need material things like clothes or possessions, because they have each other, and that's all that matters - risks being seen as simply a gratuitous nude shot by anyone else who doesn't get it.

Not that this was my idea for the challenge or anything...;-)

BINGO!

I bet the scores in this will be really low. Everyone has a different interpretation, and will think everyone else is either being too literal or shoehorning. Anyone with half a brain will avoid it if they know what's good for them - oh, that's right, I've entered -d'oh!

There is a difference between things that count and things that matter. I can already see in this thread that people will be interpreting this challenge loosely. Personally, I won't be voting loosely. Sorry, but I'm not a fan of shoe horns no matter how creative, but that's just me.

Just enter any photo you want. Because it is the thought that counts...

Here we go... ;P

Personally I think the quote refers to both interpretations, but favour the "things that matter" version because material things are a far less interesting subject.
quote interpretation

count
verb
1. (often with up) add (up), total, reckon (up), tot up, score, check, estimate, calculate, compute, tally, number, enumerate, cast up I counted the money. It came to more than five hundred pounds.
2. matter, be important, cut any ice (informal), carry weight, tell, rate, weigh, signify, enter into consideration It's as if your opinions just don't count.
3. consider, judge, regard, deem, think of, rate, esteem, look upon, impute I count him as one of my best friends.
4. include, number among, take into account or consideration The years before their arrival in prison are not counted as part of their sentence.

Per an online source, only one of the four definitions focuses on ennumeration. Interestingly, when using an instrument that tallies numbers, it is a good question whether the one that is "counting" is the instrument or the person using it. Seems a shame to try to absolutely exclude the second definition("matter") from any consideration, particularly when the details for this challenge are written to clearly remind us there is more than one definition. Maybe the highest scores should go to the images that incorporate more than one definition.
