On my walk at lunchtime today I stumbled upon this guy/girl. He/she was oblivious to all the walkers and joggers along the path so I was able to get off quite a few shots. Comments/critiques are welcome.

I thought about that, however I have the rest of the month to find something better. I think I'll be taking the camera to work more often.

The stray feather in shot#3 adds alot of interest to the image.

Don't know if I agree about the feather, but I like #3 best. It is a good "pose". I don't know if you work in the technology field or not, but if you do I understand the need to take walks at lunch. :)

I recommend taking your camera with you always then. Yours are good shots.

I think the feather adds more "depth of character" to the bird...

I know, it's a bird, but without the stray feater, the heron is the same as the other heron down the road...

I think the first one is "Waiting" - for lunch.

Great shots c, they are such beautiful birds.

Nice work! I like #3 because of the way the patterns in the foamy water echo the pattern of the bird's neck in an interesting way.

beautiful pictures! i think i like the one in flight best. one day i must move to canada (after global warming makes the winters less harsh), i love your portfolio.

I agree 3 is the best, has the most detail in the feathers, and the background works well. I would like 4 a bit more if you could maybe try cropping ou the rocks?

I have to agree that 3 is really great. But I also really love 4, the framing is really nice and it has such clarity. Excellent!

Really like all of the shots. #3 is my favourite, though.

Beautiful painterly quality to these images. The feather and other detail is outstanding. Zeusen, care to share the story behind the capture of these beauties?

Our coasts (like yours) are teeming with herons. Being great fishermen, of course, they're not too difficult to photograph, since they often stay in the same spot, motionless and for minutes on end. When they fly off, little is usually lost, because it's likely they'll return to where the fishing is good.

Given accessible ground and with a little patience they can be approached, even followed, closely. The difficulty is in getting good light under the wings when they're airborne and choosing a perspective for a background that isn't too distracting. If possible, I try to shoot down on the wings, so the lighter feathers don't blend too much with a bright sky. 1/600 to 1/800 is an apt shutter speed for these birds, IMO.

A good place to start out is a roost, especially at this time of year when there is a lot of activity around them. Eagles occasionally visit the roosts to raid them, which is too bad for the herons. Adult birds will fly back and forth, either carrying food in their tummies or sticks in their beaks to repair their nests.

Very early in the year I stalked a young adult (albeit a heron, not a human 'bird') and, after an hour or so, took a picture from two, perhaps three, feet away. He didn't mind me changing lenses either. I felt honoured. ;-)

Where do you work that you have such a beautiful view and Herons flying around?! That's amazing!

Wow...these are some really great bird photos. This is one of best I've seen:

I really like it except for the left hand side where the rocks and twigs are.

I took them downtown Ottawa, right along the river. However, I think it's rare to see a heron there. Mostly ducks and seagulls.

These are all great heron shots! I have one that comes to my pond in my backyard, but he is very skittish and I can't go anywhere near him!

sigh :) keep up the great work!
