Our Caribbean family "reunion" trip isn't going to work. Trying to please everyone isn't easy. But most importantly, my wife's father wants to go to Florida, and somewhere "easy and quick to get to". (The reunion is his 85th birthday, and he wants to fly back to Philly the day after.) Now they're talking about simply going to Miami.

I don't know if there are many photo ops there. :(

Any recommendations for "easy-to-get-to" places in Florida good for a diverse family get together and some fun things and photo ops? Or would Miami really be ok?

Well, I've lived in Broward my whole life, which is about 45 minutes North of Miami. I have never been a big fan of Miami, I think I would suggest Ft. Lauderdale on the beach as a great place to stay. That area is really laid back and has a great night life. Plus you are still only 45 minutes from Miami and could make a day of it. I can promise you there is plenty to shoot down here. The beach will give you some awesome sunrise shots and walking up and down the strips, whether it be South Beach or Ft. Lauderdale will provide some great candid shots.

Anyway, just my two cents, but if it were me, I'd do Ft. Lauderdale. I would consider the Riverside hotel actually, //www.riversidehotel.com/ That is where my wife and I got married and we stay there from time to time when we want to go down to Las Olas, which has an amazing night life, and not have to drive home. The Riverside is also like 5 minutes from the beach :)

I've devoted my photo-a-week side challenge for 2010 to Palm Beach County, FL. Until I became really interested in photography as a hobby, I had NO idea what this county has to offer. Of course there'll be a LOT more to do in Miami or Orlando but PB County offers a LOT of options for lodging (on the beach is my favorite), dining, entertaining and PHOTOGRAPHY.

Here is my blog that has been documenting my journey through my county through my photography. Just in 5 weeks I think you can get a good feel for the variety.

If you look at my Flickr photostream, most of my pictures are taken in this county.

We do also have an airport that is easy to get in & out of. By the way, we're about 40 minutes north of Broward.

How many people are you planning to have with you when you are out to shoot pix? If it's only one car load, you may enjoy taking the fast ferry from Miami to Key West, spend a night, then drive back up to Miami. It's about a 2 hour drive straight, without stopping, so add time for photo ops and eats. There are a lot of good places to see in the Fl Keys.
What does your Dad like to do. The trip should be planned around that if you can.
ETA,
You may enjoy hooking up with Robert yakatme and driving from Miami out to Flamingo. There are some great nature ops on that side trip.

Our group size will be 20-22 people. But there's only one other photographer in the extended family...and it will probably just be me. But get togethers with DPCers sound good!

The photo ops suggested below sound good. Palm beach county looks good too.

I guess wherever we need to be, I should rent a car.

Actually, Parrot Jungle in Miami would be fun for some bird shots. I have so few of those.

You might want to check out Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Delray Beach (in Palm Beach County). One of my favorite FREE places to take bird pictures. I did a search on Flickr and came up with these:

I like Islamorada, but it's blasted expensive, and about half way into the Keys... So I'm not sure I could honestly recommend it, other than to say if you do go to Miami, it's about a two hour drive..

Here's a photo,
