I have a few comments regarding players, and some regarding team. Some technical comments as well, and my score is about what i expected.
What is interesting, is the number of comments -214 votes, 21 comments!
Is this because my picture moves people (to comment) or becuase the number of entries is sorta low folks have time to comment?
Anyone else getting large number of comments?

Just to throw in my 2¢... I consider a "team sport" to be one in which multiple participants (that is, at least 2) on the same team, are competing simultaneously and together against another set of participants on the other team. Soccer, football, baseball, basketball, hockey, la crosse, rugby, field hockey, etc. meet my definition of a "team sport". Tennis is one of those sports that can be a team sport or can't -- played as "singles", it is not a team sport. Played as "doubles" it is. Golf doesn't meet my definition since only one participants ball (per hole, anyway) is "in play" at any given time. |
Are you nuts? how many participants balls are in play at one time during a rugby game? baseball? basketball? What is this in "my definition" stuff. Are you related to the Websters (the dictionary folkes)?
Lets have "cars" as our next topic. Anyone who shots a KIA I will give a "1" because I don't consider them REAL cars.. Suzuki, and Hundai get 2's (the tiny wheels on those things hardly qualify them)... Any GEO's will get am imediate message saying that thay did not meet the challenge. I mean, who thinks of them as cars? Certainly not me!
Silly isn't it?

A team sport is what it is. It seems simple...if a photo hasn't captured the essence of team, then us team of voters can score the photo accordingly. |

I couldn't agree more!! The challenge should be about how well the photographer presents their feeling about a team sport. If this is done well the veiwer should understand that feeling. However, a photo that efffectively expresses a feeling, and meets the challenge, should not be disreguarded because of the viewers preconceived notion of what sports are and are not TEAM sports.
The scoring of pictures is subjective. And I respect everyones right to express their opinion on the quality of an image.
I do not however, think that we have the right to define what a "team sport" is. That has already been defined. (team-a group on the same side as in a game; sport-an activity usually involving exertion and having a set form and body of rules;game. Therefore, a sport that has a group of people participating on the same side, is a team sport. By definition auto racing, golf, swimming, etc., can be team sports. Just because they may also be individual sports, does not precluded them.
So then we are back to the photos themselves. Did the artist capture the TEAM sport? If so how well (creatively, exposed well, good composition....)

I just finished my voting, but haven't gone back to comment yet. I was pretty disappointed with the submissions for this challenge, but not because some people used a loose definition of team. I was looking for photos that captured the essence or "notion" of some aspect of the team sport. How well does a ball sitting in the grass capture the essence of baseball/football/soccer, etc? In my opinion, it doesn't. I was looking for shots that made me say "Yeah! That's what it's about!" but unfortunately there were very few that managed to do that. I guess this ended up being a very difficult challenge to shoot for. |

Well, let's see. In a game of american football, the ball for 22 particpants is in play. It is only one ball, but that ball is the "key object" for all participants. So to further clarify my definition of a team sport where people work together simultaneously towards a common goal, another key factor is that the participants share a ball. They don't each have their own like they do in golf (even if they are playing "best ball", each player still has their own ball), or bowling. (And just because you can share a golf ball or a bowling bowl doesn't make it a team sport -- each person's ball is still scored independently.)

Not to me. You are free to vote this challenge so that golf, bowling, yo-yo'ing, unicycling, jogging, etc. are all team sports if you want to. Just because people can do some activity together doesn't automatically make it a "team sport". To me, when I enter a challenge (and I don't have one in Team Sports Without Players), I try meeting the challenge in such a way that there is no question about whether or not it meets the challenge. If I were to enter the TSWP challenge, I would certainly photograph something related to a sport where there is no question that it is considered a "team sport". Otherwise you are just asking for "doesn't meet the challenge" comments and votes. But if you enter something that is obviously a team-related sport (football, rugby, soccer, etc.), you don't have to worry. And that is my point more than anything else. |

Eddy,
Are you familiar with how a "best ball" golf tournament works?
That is definitely a team sport.

This discussion of individual vs team sports is driving me friggin nuts, most sports have team play, even the non traditional 'team' sports, golf, martial arts, track etc. Just vote on the merit of the photos and the overall theme and stop the arguing and nitpicking. It just drives me nuts that scores get driven lower over all of these issues, and people keep quoting the dictionaries. Enjoy the beauty of these photos, there are quite a few great shots out there.

here's something else to flame the fire. in college, golf is a team sport in the same way track is. the 5 players from each school have their scored combined to find out which school wins. |

From my earlier post ...
The news is so hot they haven't even updated their own web site, but the University of California Golden Bears Men's Golf Team has just won the NCAA championship. I don't see the names of any players on the front page or leading the stories either .... congratulations! |

Do all those pictures of just a ball or other equipment used during a teamsport capture the essence of a team ? If it is your mind that is determining whether it is a teamsport, based on background knowledge, instead of the picture conveying it....how good is the picture ?
Can of worms.

My photo has no "i" in it, and there's no "i" in team, so it meets the challenge.

I'm with you on that! I started out at 6.4 for the first 30-40 votes, and have been dropping precipitously ever since. Now at 5.8, --respectable--, but it keeps going down... Stop already!!!

My score is rising! Up about .2 or so today. Since that is about a 10% improvement, it is a big deal. LOL
Actually my score is fair - this time I agree with the voters and commenters. Just hit 30 comments! A new record for me! And not my worst pic (by score or my opinion)!
Happy to lose, this time. ;)

I have an amazing 290 votes!
Amazing considering only 160 entries for the challenge.
Only 9 comments, but I'm not complaining.

I used a real simple definition of team. Could I go online and find a professional team league. I found 2 sports, and only 2 that could not fit this definition. And I found one that met it, but I still could not quite shoehorn in.
Ryder Cup golf- international teams. Score is based on total team play.
Gymnastics- team score is based on performance of all individuals.
Cycling- team time trial goes towards lead rider's overall score.
and so on.

Just finished voting on this round... If I see another basketball hoop, I may just shoot myself, although by some miracle, we've been spared of kittens, babies and flowers in this round
