My dad, bewit, just joined the site (yay!), and I'm not sure how to tell him to resize to 300KB and save for challenges using Capture NX. He's entering the Portrait of a wild bird challenge, and already has an entry in at 795px to get it under the 300kb max. I don't think anyone is going to notice that 5px missing, but I'd like to be able to help him hit the 300kb limit without changing the desired dimensions. I know nothing about that program, so can someone please help us out?

So much to teach my 'ol grasshoppah... so much to teach...

I don't get why you're worried about not attaining the 300kb limit, it's just that, a limit. It can be 230kb if you want or whatever it's saved at.

It doesn't have to be 300kb, anything under that is perfect. :)

Unless I didn't understand your post.

Ack! I meant to hit under the 300kb and still maintain the 800px. Like in Photoshop you Save for web and optimize to 300kb which reduces the overall quality if necessary to stay under the 300kb.

I obviously don't know Capture NX but I'm sure there's an option to save the jpeg at a quality setting you can choose. Lower it until you get to under 300kb.

I'm sure a Nikon member will drop in soon for more help.

1. Menu choice Adjust > Fit Photo. Enter 800 in both Width and Height. Click Apply. NX will figure out the long size and then resize it to 800.

2. This is a step you will have to repeat until you get it right. File > Save As. Set the "Save As Type" to JPG on the bottom of the dialog. Give it a File Name. Click Save. You are then presented with a dialog that asks how much compression you want. Typically a DPC entry will be between 70 and 90. Try 80 to start with. When the file is saved, the title bar of the image will say something like 278k next to the image name. That's how big the final image is. You then keep bumping the compression up or down to get as close to 300k as possible.

Once dad figures out the basics of the site, he can teach me how to appeal to voters.

After about 15 votes:
Dad's score: 6.5
Mine: 6.2
