I brought my Nikon D700 to Nikon to get the dented hot shoe repaired. My camera bag fell to the floor with the top of the bag hitting the ground. The left side of the hot shoe is bent in so I can't fit my flash on it. Nikon said that it would cost a minimum of 150USD and a max of 320USD. Anyone have experience with this?

I once brought in my D80 for repairs. When I brought the D80 in I had taken off all accessories for the repairs. This time I had my 50mm on there and for some reason they decided to 'check' to see how it was running. They called me up and said "For 100USD we can get it working smoothly again. It's off focus by a bit." I replied with "It's not off focus when I'm using it. The lens can stay as is." It felt like I was being taken advantage of maybe. They figured they would squeeze a few extra out of me somewhere. Kinda disappointing.

I suppose it is possible that it was off "a bit". Your definition, my definition and Nikon's definition of "a bit" are probably all different. I just hope that the lens isn't worse when you get it back than it was when you sent it in.
