My only point was that if you place value in monetary terms, LIFE will pass you by.

Old man, if you want to sit and think about the one that got away all day and whittle wood on your front porch, I award you that honor, youve earned it. Haha. |

Tease.....8>)
So the local young bull on the construction site is giving the old guy a hard time about how he's so much stronger.....and that he'd outlift the old guy with ANYTHING!!!
The old guy say "Anything?"
The young bull say, "Yep!"
The old guy say, "Wanna put $100 on it that you can lift anything I can?"
The young guys says "Yep!"
The old guy goes over to the side of a building where there's a wheelbarrow leaning, grabs it, wheels it back over, sets it down, looks at the young guy and says "Get in!".

And then would it be possible to have certain challenges where only a select group would be able to vote on them?something like a masters challenge where only the particapents voted or only a select panel? just some thoughts off the top of my head and its late and my spelling probably sucks lol |
Sounds like a worthwhile idea to me! If there were some challenges where all the voting was done by a panel of respected DPC photographers then people with more "out there" artistic ambitions would be tempted to submit their photos. And they would learn too, since hopefully the panel members would provide constructive criticism in the comments. I'm not saying that every challenge should be like this, just enough of them to challenge us to appreciate more than just rule-of-thirds water drops... |

Essentially something like Juried challenges, held in similar fashion to print competitions? |

I didn't complain. I asked a question with the hope of learning something that can then be used to make DPC an even better resource for photographers. And, I wasn't concerned with "older" photographers, I wanted to keep the attention of the photographers who where more experienced so they could help photographers with less experience.
Just the other day somebody asked about the difference between a traditional softbox and an octbox. It took a full day to get just three responses and I'm sure mine wasn't that helpful. I would love to have had one of our more experienced photographers jump in and provide some wisdom.
I don't think trying to understand our weaknesses, as photographers or as a community, and improve is being negative. |

Often I take a few minutes to see how DPC is evolving. I am more than pleased with the great work that is being turned out. Of all my endeavors DPC ranks as the most unforgettable. Truly nice people including those whom I disagreed with. The overall artistic play field will serve all of you with untold pleasant memories.
My misfortune is the search for goals which often prove more of a majestic inconvenience. I have always been like this and as I approach age 72 I feel just like kid I was at sixteen. Fortunately I enjoy good health and the energy level is still too high for my own good. I have taken the goal of playing the alto sax. Drills and drills with minute returns, but somehow I feel I must conquer this adventure. So, yes, to a degree I am absent from DPC but somewhere I pray to achieve my immediate goal and perhaps return to this wonderful place. I do miss you all. |

Daniel, what an absolute delight to hear from you! Last it was the clarinet, so now the alto sax, is it? Lovely choices, both, and I wish you enjoyment in your pursuit. For *our* sakes, though, do drop in a bit more often, would you? :-) |

well I suppose I've been around a while but not so succesfull in my present sojourn. But we all have an adgenda I guess and once that is fuffilled we move on. I have learned a whole lot on this site and not only about photography, although a break away for some is needed. I guess at this poit DPC has changed in its attitudes, it is not so forgiving or tolerent towards those who see photography in a different light from the masses

Originally posted by Nusbaum: There have been a number of recent threads discussing the attrition of strong/respected photographers from our site. These threads usually end poorly as the discussion turns to wanting more features or more participation from the SC. Rather than go down that path, I'm very curious to hear thoughts on where these photographers have gone? Are they just so successful they've become too busy? Have they moved on to knew communities? Have they outgrown the site and gone out in search of greater challenges? |
Well I'm not sure that I was ever either strong or respected around here - certainly haven't ever won a ribbon - but I have been a member for 5 years and got my start here. And while DPC used to be the first tab I opened when I launched my browser, now I only stop by a couple of times a week.
I hang out over at Fredmiranda.com these days. Don't post a whole lot, but I love reading the forums there. For starters, it's a lively place; there are usually new/updated posts as fast as I can hit the refresh button. I see a lot more great photos posted there, too, and the discussions are actually photo-oriented.
I got tired of all the off-topic threads here, and the months-long period of nastiness in the forms soured me. And now, things here are just slowwww. Basically, the elements that drew me to DPC no longer exist, so I've largely moved on.
And at first, that made me sad. Then I felt hope, because it seemed a fair group of folks here felt the same way and wanted to stage a revival. But I've pretty much given up on that.

Can't say as I am overly successful, but I started my online photos at Dp. They were the first. After that I moved on to places like Better Photo, Eyefetch and Flickr. Now I have a gallery site at Smugmug and am doing shows and portrait work. Still, dp overwhelms me. Every time I start up with the site after being away, I once again am the horrid photographer with no talent. Don't know why it has that effect on me. It does have a lot of good help, though, and I learned so much about photoshop from dp. That is worth alot. Saved me a bundle since I didn't have to take classes to learn.

LOL, Yup. I think I have more fun over there than I do here. However, I've learned a lot here, just not that big at entering the challenges.
Which is interesting since I have a great prop for the exit and/or exit challenge. *shrug* |
