It looks to me as though this might be be blown a little out of proportions. There are still lots of great photographers here and there are many that are learning from the challenges and getting better. We cannot expect that everyone stays around here forever or else something is wrong with the site and concept.

In fact; I'm surprised (and thankful!) that so many of the original SC are still here and it never ceases to amaze me that they keep showing up in forums and challenges with enthusiasm after years of moderating the site for wackos like me. And langdon is still developing the site making new features and functionality. I'm not sure though that threads like this exactly boosts the ambition of the old school still left nor motivates the new guys to go for gold (or blue to be exact).

Maybe instead of putting our efforts into constantly analyzing what's wrong and planning entirely new things we should take care of what we have and make it an enjoyable place to be. Not to say that you don't; but let's continue. I have been to many other contest sites; but I yet have to find one that has the colorful spirit and soul that DPC has grown to achieve.

And when the "Great Photographers" leave there will be many new forthcoming. The king is dead, long live the (new) king!

Just my 2 cents

There are many here now who will be leaving because their interest isn't piqued anymore in a few years, just like all those who have already left.

Life (even at DPC) goes on.

There are not many internet communities that do not suffer from the older folks leaving, it's all part of the game. The new ones become the masters and so on...

Complaining about the older photogs leaving is kind of selfish to me. It's like you want things to stay the same forever and we all know that isn't going to happen unless DPC becomes a religion.

while i've never felt i could compete here (just don't have the time and resources to travel for shots or to set them up), i've done pretty well in the real world. dpc is just not the real world.

i won't enter challenges unless i have an image i don't care about being stolen.

i love the community when it acts as a community and comes together. can't stand it when a handful of individuals do nothing but piss in the pool we all drink from. sometimes it's entertaining to read advice given by people who've never tried what they're suggesting to others...

so, where do you go when you've had enough here? depends on what you're after. if it's competition, the real world is extremely competitive. if it's more practical forums, there are plenty of professional forums, run by professionals for professionals. if it's a matter of sharing images within a peer group, flickr's pretty good for that.

it's not as much as feeling that there's nothing left to get out of dpc, i don't think, as much as it's a matter of feeling there's not much left to contribute, especially when you don't feel like shoe-horning in challenge entries or competing with the same old eye-candy...

and if you've had your fill here, there's always facebook ;-)

I guess he pops his head in every so often, but I really enjoyed the work of graphicfunk. Ironically, the last thread he posted to was Favorite photographers that are no longer with us.

ok so the question as i see it is what keeps this a learning site and how could it be changed. to pose a possible answer is it possible it stays a learning site because of the voters? they are not experienced enough to appreicate some of the finer forms of art? And then would it be possible to have certain challenges where only a select group would be able to vote on them?something like a masters challenge where only the particapents voted or only a select panel? just some thoughts off the top of my head and its late and my spelling probably sucks lol

Agreed - very creative, and just such a genuinely nice guy.

I think at some point you realize that you are spending x amount of time to win a virtual ribbon, when you could be using that time to sell yourself and actually make tangible hold in your hands and spend on stuff money.

Really? I've never really considered trying to make money from photography. I did try the stock route but was rejected everywhere I tried. I'm just a hobbyist. Is that odd? Wrong, maybe?

I miss ubique who was a great inspiration to me, likely unknown to him. BUT many great photographers are still here. It is always a thrill when I get a comment from one of the real veterans on this site.

Not wrong at all. I think this site is perfect for hobbyist. But at some point, if you have professional ambitions, you have to look at what you are investing your time into and what the return of that time is (as well as the cost)

I don't enter challenges here for a variety of reasons; one of them being: day job + school + paid gigs + new house + new wife = very little free time to spend on such things.

3 hours spent shooting for a challenge is 3 hours that could have been spent marketing, booking gigs, shoooting gigs, etc.

Old addage: If it don't make dollars, it don't make sense.

No, it just means that you're a phiotographer and not a photography business.

To some of us, it's not remotely about the money.

I had my own business before, doing what I loved, and people paid me. It was quite different in that I worked within a very narrow specialty where there was more demand for the services than could be provided.

To be a profitable photographer, it's a lot more about marketing and business acumen than photography.

NOT interested.

To get back on topic, if it's just about developing photography and the community means nothing to you, then people pretty much have to move on after you've achieved a certain point in awards and accolades.

For me, it doesn't really matter how I do.....not that I'm likely to become a Shannon or Irene clone......but I have been enjoying some success of late.

But I'm much more looking forward to the upcioming Rickett's Glen trip, the NYC GTG, the DK Challenge Workshop, and the many wonderful relationships that make DPC important to me.

It's like any other hobby. You do it when you have time. If you do get to the point that you won't spend time on your hobby unless it pays you money; then it's no longer a hobby.

Life is a series of choices and no matter what one you make, you are going to be missing out on a lot. Theres a cost to doing anything in life and there will be missed opportunities no matter what road you take, but its my bed and I lie in it no matter what road I go down.

*edit: If you sit around and worry about what you are missing out on, you will never be happy, ever.

My only point was that if you place value in monetary terms, LIFE will pass you by.

It is also possible that you may even someday give some credence to what people with some life experience have to say......one never knows.......8>)
