I had to use my virtuoso photoshop skillz to photoshop my home into the not very up to date bing maps picture.
It sure is a nice place where I live!

ETA: house is canopied by trees from that angle and zooming doesn't let you see anything but a snip of roof.

I haven't looked at the Google Earth view of our home lately, and I was quite surprised to see that not only was there a new space image, but the Googlemobile has hit our street! Our road isn't exactly a major highway, so I was pretty surprised to see that they visited our neighborhood. Here's our house on the street view!

A low-altitude view. The dotted lines show the approximate property boundaries.
This higher view shows our location relative to the nearest town (Deer Island) and the Columbia River.
This high-altitude view shows our location relative to the rest of the state (north-west corner of Oregon).

A nice steak laced with something will do him fine. So will pepper spray and a taser and a gun and a number of other items commonly or not so commonly available. |

There is literally a car that drives around, capturing "Street View" images for Google maps. In some areas, people have protested against it, claiming it to be an invasion of privacy.
Here in Pittsburgh, there was a neighborhood who made a massive party out of the arrival of the car. Check this out!! |

I have a little insight being involved in this business of geographic data. I can tell you that using just the pictures that some of you have posted here and information in your profiles it's very easy to find many of your homes. The reality is that using information from most of our profiles and simple tools like google and google maps anyone can it narrow it down to a neighborhood or so. Posting pictures with circles around your home just pin-points the exact spot. With it narrowed down that far it's pretty easy to even get pictures of your homes (or nearby spots in your neighborhood) using google street view
Just testing the theory I've been able to find several posted here even when you've blurred or omitted the labels. Just a word of caution, be careful what you post.

My name and address are in the phone book, if anyone wants to find me they can look it up, so posting an aerial view of my house isn't going to make it any easier to find me. At least on the pic of my neighbourhood I blocked out the street names. |

HA. It is easier to just show you the front door! I was getting seasick trying to
work the coordinates on Google Earth.
The contractor who did the repairs came back and painted the siding. So it is
respectable again.

So what? What are you planning to do with that information...? I'm sure that with even the most minor amount of investigative work, most of us could come up with the addresses and other data for a ton of folks here. To make it easy for you... I'm at 739 Ridge Road, Ambridge, PA. Knock on the door and I'll be more than happy to offer you a Pepsi.
I'm just not sure I understand why any of this would make people very paranoid, unless they have a stalker coming after them or some such thing.

Not much to see here from the air. I like the trees though. Some of them are about 70 ft tall.

I don't plan to do anything with the information. I was only pointing out to those that may be concerned with their privacy how easy it is to use the limited information posted to find more detail than they may realize. I agree with your comment regarding a minor amount of investigation and stated something similar.
People have different comfort levels regarding their private info. Obviously most of you participating in this thread aren't paranoid and that's ok. But I do find it interesting that several people took the time to omit or blur the labels, I assume to protect their privacy to some degree. However, it doesn't help at all when just a bit of investigation work combined with their picture you can easily find their exact location.
Let me rephrase what I said before. Instead of be careful of what you post I'll say just be aware you may be giving away more than you think.
Thanks for the Pepsi offer, According to google it'll take 10 hours and 57 minutes to travel the 691 miles so I'll see you some time tomorrow. |
