I'm not participating on this one. Sorry for the low average score, but too many too bad photos in my opinion. And so many CD photos, so boring...
There are however a few really great photos.

I'm trying to improve my judgement skills and have commented a lot of the bad ones and the good ones too. Hope my comments make sense for you and help you in some manner.

Well, you're not much lower on this challenge than your overall voting score so why do you feel the need to apologize on this challenge? Apparently it's hard for you to find any images you really like on here...yet you want us to donate money so you can buy a lens? Good luck with that. Sorry, I'm trying to improve my people skills. :P

I'm not really apologizing since I don't need to. I'm just justifying for those like you who may get pissed off about my average voting score. But really, I don't need to have a high average voting score and don't expect anyone to vote high on most photos so my photos get a higher score. I want to be in the few good photos of the challenge for majority of voter's opinions.

Regarding the donation stuff, can you donate $1 for a people of the 3rd world, or you are too angry because you don't like my comment? Take it easy, after the challenge ends I will go to your photo and try to find something else to comment, maybe give you some hint that I may find useful. Not asking for your donation, ok? Just will try to help...

Maybe you should improve your people skills really, since a person who donates usually don't ask anything in exchange, specially a higher score.

I can't speak for the OP, but I think some people find an average vote given of less than 5 to be quite low. Many people consider a 5 to be an average shot, and that's saying that, in general -- looking at your overall average, you find the majority of photos on this site to be worse than average.

Personally, I'm very glad that you posted this. I know that there are people who give lower average scores, and since you are posting it here, it seems safe to assume that you're not low-balling other scores to raise yours. So my question for you is this: would you be willing to explain your voting? Are half of the photos on this site truly sub-par, in your opinion? Or are you not using 5 as an average? Are you looking at a smaller range? Do you take your own average into account when voting? E.g., this photo is better than my stuff, this photo is worse than mine...

Please don't take this as a criticism of any type. I'm truly interested. It reminds us that not everyone votes the same way and can give us insight into other methods.

I'm guessing that there's at least 8 people with scores higher than mine -- very likely more. There should definitely be scores in the 7s -- it's a fun challenge.

So, if you don't want to post your scores, feel free to post something like: "hey Wendy, I'm so far above you, I'm getting a nosebleed!"

btw, thanks GiorgioBaruffi!

Don't worry about me, I'm wayyyy below you this time...

I'll give some ideas... even don't really having the obligation for it, right?

First, I must admit that I'm starting to really learn how to vote correctly. In the begining, I was voting to learn, but after voting on some challenges, I figured out my best and worse photos were most times different from the DPC mass. So I concluded I was not still able to judge a photo correctly. I would need to train my eyes so I could recognize better what is wrong and right on a photo.

This is the first challenge that I vote in some months, and now I can see things that I was not able before. This specific challenge has some great photos, but lots of boring CD snapshots. So, even my voting average being as low as always, this time it's far more criterious than before.

My criteria is:
1 and 2 for really bad photos in most aspects. Usually vote 1 for photos that look like cell phone photos and that I judge are candidates to brown ribbon.
3 for really bad photos that have something that attenuates the bad aspects.
4 for photos that are regular quality in most aspects.
5 for average photos in most technical aspects but without anything appealing to me.
6 for average/good photos that are mostly good in technical aspects, appealing a little to me.
7 for good photos that are good in most technical aspects and appealing well to me.
8 for really good ones, those that I don't see any techincal mistake and appealing well to me.
9 for really good ones, those that I don't see any techincal mistake and appealing very very well to me. Perfect photos, but not appealing so well as the 10ish.
10 for perfect photos with huge appealing.

8, 9 and 10 are ribbon worthy to me, but my preference for ribbons are the photos that I vote 9 or 10.

Why don't we have any 8 or 9 average score for any photo after the challenge ends? Even perfect photos are limited to 7ish scores. I think people tends to score very low without giving a reason. I'm changing my attitude here, starting on this challenge, and I'll try to vote only if I'm willing to comment on every photo. Giving reasons for my vote. I think the comments would be required for every photo that you vote, or at least if you vote 4 or less. This would certainly result in more criterious voting.

I'm trying to comment on every photos, giving reasons for my votes, and hope it helps in some manner. For me it's helping to improve my judgement skills and hence helping to improve my ability to make my own photos before I press the shutter. I still need to comment on more photos and while doing it I will review my votes and try to keep them as consistent as possible, according to my criteria.

Hope it clears something.

Ah, must add that I will never vote on challenges that I'm participating. That's just my preference to avoid myself comparing other photos with my photos.

Marcus, My comment was said tongue in cheek. Hence the tongue at the end of the post (:P). For the record...I am not pissed nor am I angry. You didn't leave a comment on my photo and for what's it's worth I also did not photograph a DVD or CD. So there is nothing in your post that I took personal or was upset about.
The people skills comment was also a tease in reference to your comment about working on your voting skills. Trying more to get a laugh more than anything else.
Do I think you have a low overall voting average...yes, I do but there are definitely worse on here. If your voting average was 2 points higher would it help my photo scores in any way...no it wouldn't. Not when there are hundreds of people voting on each photo. So, again it doesn't really matter to me and it all comes out in the wash.
I would venture to say that your voting criteria is not much different than most including myself. After voting on so many photos one gets a feel for where the photo falls rather quickly and it almost becomes second nature in my opinion. Personally I ALWAYS vote on every photo in a challenge. I never pick and choose some of the worst and some of the best just to hit that 20% voting requirement. I see every photo and judge it on it's own merits and never against the others in the challenge and never against my own. For those that vote on a curve and compare photos to others and rank them accordingly it serves no purpose and it's ineffective not to mention tedious. All photos should be judged on their own merits within the challenge and we should let the chips fall where they may. Even it that means ones voting criteria plays a hand in the poor performance of ones own submission. That's how we learn.

As for my own photos you are always welcome to add feedback to them as is everyone else...good or bad. Even though my scores fail to reflect my own personal progress to any large degree I feel I have gained a huge amount of knowledge and insight into photography both in the art form and the technical aspects of it. I have learned my own limitations and have made mental notes on how to overcome them in the future. I love my Canon S5 IS, but have also learned the limitations of it as well in going up against even entry level DSLRs. I've discovered that while I have a strong love of photo styles and techniques of all forms I am most passionate about shooting landscape and macro photography. I'm not really into personally filling my portfolio with portrait shots or wedding etc. That's good for me because I have absolutely no lighting equipment beyond natural ligting or incandescent. With that in mind I can focus my attention and money in the future on a great camera body and lenses without the desire to save for lighting etc. To each there own. I do however love great portrait shots and still life etc and vote without discrimination even if it's not my cup of tea. That is the way it should be. I personally don't submit photos in hopes of getting a ribbon. I submit them in hopes of each photo surpassing the last or at the very least in hopes of one or two people really appreciating what they see. The smile I get on my face when someone says they like what I've done and the knowledge I gain in the process in my ribbon. Someday when the stars and planets align, I have my DSLR, I put what I've learned to effective use and luck is on my side I will get a DPC ribbon. Until then I'm having fun and that's all anyone who truly loves photography can ask for. :)

As for the donation thing...well there are people in third world countries that have far better cameras and lenses than I do and that's great. I just believe in working hard for the things I get in life and not asking others to get them for me. If someone needs food, shelter, clothing etc. I will give them what I have to make their live more comfortable. Giving someone money so they can buy a lens...well I think that's different and we can agree to disagree on that one. :)

Have a great day and good luck in all your DPC challenges!

Sorry about the DQ. That must be disappointing. I am happy so far- just made a perfect mark of 6.0. First time in months I have been that high (July according to my profile). I guess people like colorful photos, eh? Tee hee. That was the point on this one! Just got home from work and haven't checked out the other entries yet. I was going to the first night it rolled over but then the "technical difficulties" at DP kicked in.

Happily surprised! Just hope that the voters dispensing such generous votes don't turn into t*****s come Sunday...

jmulvihill, fwiw, if in doubt about an editing step, just play safe and don't use it. As I've *finally* learned, you have to enter a good shot in the first place! IMHO, pp should be the icing on the cake and that's it. I do use pp, but try to do less as opposed to more.

You're welcome! You, and anyone else who cares to, is certainly Feelfree to take a look at my portfolio, esp the early stuff from all of 2006...and a lot of 2007...and maybe a few less from 2008...and maybe a couple from 2009 ;-)
